Update Akwa Ibom, a flagship Radio Program of the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Akwa Ibom State has played host to the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Ini Adiakpan.
The Commissioner appeared on the program from the stable of Passion FM 94.5 Udo Udoma, Uyo. Akwa Ibom State.
The Interview session focused on International Day for Rural Women, Girl child and Gender Based Violence.
Commenting on the International Day of Rural Women, Dr. Adiakpan stated that when talking about healthy foods, reference is made to the rural women.
She maintained that the Celebration of the Rural Women underscored their importance and efforts in contributing to the socio economic status of the State.
Dr. Adiakpan stressed that the theme for this year’s Celebration, ‘Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All’ brings to consciousness, the fact that, the Rural Women play active role in the production, processing and distribution of the food consumed by others in the world.
Her Words: “As a Ministry, to mark the international day of Rural Women, we celebrated the rural women in Ika Local government Area where 40 handsets and SIM cards were distributed to the rural women, and were educated on digitization, mobile banking and crowdfunding”
She continued, “on the issue of the girl child, with this year’s theme, “Digital Generation our Generation” focus was on creating awareness and sensitizing the girls on the need to use the internet and the digital applications to their advantage”
Dr. Adiakpan said the children were mentored and introduced to Apps for reading, cooking, craft, books, exercise and apps for martial arts to protect themselves.
The Honourable Commissioner speaking on the issue of the Gender Based Violence, noted that through advocacy and sensitization, many people are beginning to speak up.
The Ministry of Women Affairs, FIDA, and FEYREP have a toll line, where such cases are reported and justice being given to the victims.
Dr. Adiakpan said Akwa Ibom is blessed with a gender friendly governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel and wife, Dr. Martha Emmanuel who have empowered and trained young girls and women through FEYREP.
Dr. Adiakpan also appreciated His Excellency for providing policy framework to protect the women and children.
She noted that the Ministry is thriving through the benevolence of his Excellency, Mr Udom Gabriel Emmanuel who has provided the necessary resources to enable them to work.
