… as Dr. Glory Edet condemns sexual harassment, gender-based violence

Akwa Ibom women under the aegis of League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV) have come together to lend their voices to the continuing fight against sexual harassment and all forms of gender-based violence.

The event which started with a sensitisation road walk and later climaxed at the Governor’s office Annex, Wellington Bassey way, Uyo, was attended by female appointees of Government, women political stakeholders and other women drawn from across the 31 LGAs of Akwa Ibom state.

“As privileged women, we have to be a voice to the voiceless women. There are women that do not know what to do when they’re victimised, so one of the major things God wants us to do as leaders is to be there for others and that is why as Akwa Ibom women, we will make sure the law take its course on anyone caught in the act of abusing and molesting our women”, she said.

She charged the participants to be vigilant and report all cases of rape and other gender-based violence to relevant authorities.

“We won’t leave any stone unturned in the fight against rapists, irrespective of who the person is”, she added.

The Agriculture boss appreciated Governor Udom Emmanuel for being gender-sensitive and for signing the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law and the full implementation of the Child’s Right Law.

Also in her remarks the Deputy Speaker of the AKHA and Chairperson of NILOWV, Rt. Hon. Felicia Bassey stressed that the women of Akwa Ibom state will never relent in their fight against sexual harassment and gender-based violence in the State.

“We are here to ensure there is no hiding place for rapists, no matter who they are or how highly placed in the society”, she added.

She called on the general public to be on the watch and report all suspected cases of rape and gender-based violence to relevant authorities for necessary actions.
