GOV EMMANUEL ADVOCATES UNBIASED COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS TO RESTORE NIGERIA’S PEACE
Collaborative efforts beyond the boundaries of ethnicity, race, socio-cultural construct, religious affiliation, and doctrinal differences by faith leaders with moral authority is needed at this crucial moment to advance sustainable peace, social cohesion and hope in Nigeria
This is because the current reality in Nigeria is heartrending, and one that urgently seeks leadership with the moral authority to navigate the country out of the muddy waters of self-destruction and disintegration.
The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel asserted this at the Inclusive Security Dialogue Retreat at the Airlie Conference Center, Warrenton, Virginia,United States of America earlier this week.
At the Inclusive Security Retreat held from October 18th -20th by the Global Peace Foundation in collaboration with Vision Africa; key leaders unbundled the barriers to peace and security in Nigeria.
Governor Emmanuel was one of the few key influencers selected for the strategy meeting.
Speaking on INCLUSIVE SECURITY DIALOGUE – UNBUNDLING THE BARRIERS, Governor Emmanuel posited that “to stem the tide of extremists in Nigeria, whether religious fundamentalists, dissident Islamists, or militia groups, will ultimately mean addressing the conditions that foster radicalism – poverty, unemployment, social dislocation, cultural polarization, and a large demographic of disaffected young people.”
He said since government has been variously accused of politics of parochial interest and tyrannical agenda, it becomes difficult for it to adequately act as an arbiter for conflict resolution and genuine peace.
Mr Emmanuel, was worried that “Nigeria is facing an existential challenge nurtured by the narrow identities of politics, ethnicity, wrong interpretation of religion, and corruption, exacerbated by economic deprivations, violent extremism, and the rise of ethnic militia groups.
“In the last few months, the country has witnessed a surge in protests such as the ENDSARS with accompanying destruction of lives and property.
“Kidnapping and abductions have dramatically increased, with more than seven hundred students taken since the beginning of this year.
“We have witnessed the death of police and military officers in different parts of the country at the hands of a new group called the “Unknown Gunmen,” who have also burnt various police facilities. The rampaging of herdsmen and bandits is practically uncontrollable as they kill, maim and chase people out of their communities.”
These, he said, have led the multiple regions of the country to resorted to establishing their own security units, arguing that the central government is either unwilling or unable to protect its citizens.
Mr Emmanuel maintained that the retreat was going to afford stakeholders opportunity to meet and transparently address “critical issues and seek lasting solutions to the grave challenges facing Nigeria, beginning from an affirmation of transcendent truths that define our common humanity.”
Mr Emmanuel said the discussions would outline and examine the root causes of agitations and violences in the country, provide a safe environment for stakeholders and key actors to open dialogue and chart a path forward and also bridge gaps across ethnic, religious, cultural, and ideological divides to better understand the conflict dynamics and provide a platform for reconciliation.
The outcome of this, according to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, would be an increased understanding of the root causes of conflict and violence affecting the country, de-escalation of conflict and violence across the nation, an increase in the positive relationship between the Nigerian government and various agitating groups across the country,
He hoped the retreat could foster effective crafting and implementation of policies for the human flourishing of peoples across the identity fault lines of the country, as well as reposition the importance of universal principles and shared values as the glue for social cohesion and sustainable peace.
Among others in attendance at the conference where the GPF President, James Flynn, who gave the introductory remarks, the facilitator Bishop Sunday Onuoha, the President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Dr. Sampson Olasupo Adeniyi Ayokunle, Lanre Banjo who represented the coordinator of Oodua People’s Congress,Ganiyu Adams, Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, Islamic cleric, as well as Dr. Mohammad Camara who moderated the retreat.
In the Governor’s delegation to the retreat, was the Commissioner for Special Duties, Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Etteh.
Founded in 2009, Global Peace Foundation (GPF) is an international non-sectarian, non-partisan, nonprofit organization, which promotes an innovative, values-based approach to peace building.
2022 BUDGET: REP. IDEM RAISES CONCERN OVER HUGE DEFICIT
…Charges government agencies on revenue generation
The member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Rep. Unyime Idem has expressed concern over the huge budget deficit of the federal government in the 2022 Appropriation Bill before the National Assembly.
Idem while making contributions during debate on the general principles of the national budget on the floor of the House of Representatives also charged Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government to intensify effort in generating more revenue for the government in order to help bridge the huge deficit gap.
“When you look at the level of deficit that we have to bridge, you will discover that this country has wasted lot of resources. A situation where departments and agencies within the government still owe the government billions of naira yearly with no good explanation calls for serious concern if the country must address the challenges it faces,” Rep. Idem said.
Idem who is also the Deputy Chairman House Committee on Communications expressed worry over slow implementation of budget by MDAs and called on his colleagues not to only stop at ensuring speedy passage of the budget but also closely monitor through oversight function on government ministries and agencies to ensure that the budget is properly implemented and on time.
“From the feedback I got from many constituencies, I discover that up till now budget implementation is not up to 60 per cent as we speak. I don’t know why agencies will wait until they get 100 per cent release before they start implementation, I think it’s better they implement in stages according to what they receive from the ministry of finance because the essence of timely budget passage is to stimulate economy,” Idem added.
The lawmaker commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the timely presentation of the budget and members of the National Assembly for working tirelessly last year to ensure that 2021 budget was passed within stipulated time.

ELECTORAL ACT REVIEW: A’IBOM PDP FAULTS DIRECT PRIMARIES
Part of the Senate’s recent amendment of the Electoral Act, have been faulted by political stakeholders across the country, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Akwa Ibom State, who considers certain clauses in the amendment, disturbing.
Ventilating the position of his party, Wednesday October 13, in an interview on Uyo based radio station, XL FM, the Akwa Ibom State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr Borono Bassey, said the seeming imposition of direct primaries on political parties, by the Senate through the amendment, is against ideal democratic practice, pointing that parties should be allowed the freedom to decide which method to adopt according to peculiarities and circumstances.
Arguing further, Bassey noted that direct primaries for election of party candidates is cost intensive and will raise the budget of primary elections higher than realisable; a concern he said is capable of causing various degrees of corrupt practices and logistics crisis during the exercise.
“We are talking about a system where every member of a political party votes in a primary election and in this state, we have seen a situation where a certain party that is an opposition to the PDP adopting the direct primaries and their members fighting over authentic party register and allegations of hijacking the process by certain pay masters who fund the party”
“Different political parties have tested various kind of primaries and the flaws there constitute part of the inconveniences of this new system.”
“Imposing a direct primaries on all political parties reeks of undue interference on the internal democracy of Political Parties by the Legislature”, he said.
While speaking of the credibility of the direct primaries, he referred to the antecedents of failures of the method in previous practices by parties that had earlier adopted it.
In his words, “through the direct primaries, there is a question of credibility as votes are usually allotted in an arbitrary manner to preferred candidates.”
“In 2018 a certain political party allotted 14.8 million votes to her presidential candidate only for the same candidate to go to a general election and have votes less than half of that figure. The Same thing played out in the Lagos State Gubernatorial Primaries.”
Recall that the Nigerian Senate within the week passed an amendment to the just Electoral Act which changed some clauses in the act to include the practice of direct primaries by political parties, electronic transmission of result by INEC, among others.

The member Representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Rep. Unyime Idem, exchanging pleasantries with Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator (Dr) Ahmed Lawan, during the 2022 Budget Presentation by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the House of Representatives
“… to simply see development as an improvement in people’s welfare and well-being falls short of the mark. Development should be about lasting change. Development should not only be about improvements in the welfare of citizens, but about the capacity of the government to provide the environment for the welfare and wellbeing of the people on a sustainable and long-term basis.”
“I am sure what is happening today in our nation would shock and deeply despair the ennobling spirit of nationalism that the late Zik lived for. As despairing as things are in our nation today, we cannot give up on Nigeria. The late Zik himself did not give up on Nigeria, even when he could have. If he had fallen for the rabid fight for regional supremacy over the forces of nationhood which he championed, possibly the Nigeria we have come to know today, may not have existed, so we owe him our collective debt of gratitude.”
“This institution(UNN) is the only university which bears Nigeria’s name and the only university which was opened as part of the celebration of Nigeria’s independence by Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandria Kent on October 7, 1960. The Alumni of this institution sometimes use a car sticker with the legend, ‘An alumnus of UNN is ahead of you…naturally. ‘Today, you need to move from being ahead naturally, to being ahead nationally. You want to be ahead in solving the many complex and intricate problems that beset and threaten our nation.”
“…what Akwa Ibom needs may not be the same with Enugu or Lagos. But central to any of these is the drive to provide infrastructure and industrialize. Even advanced societies still invest in upgrading and providing more infrastructure for their people. As we speak the United States plans to spend over 3 trillion dollars to revamp its infrastructure and turn its high-flying technological place to a new berth. If a country as advanced as they are is doing this, then we are are expected to do even more in this regard.”
“Just a week and half ago, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, while commissioning The DAKKADA TOWERS, our 21-storey smart and intelligent building, the tallest and smartest in the South-South & South-East and the 7th tallest in Nigeria, described Akwa Ibom State as the emerging industrial hub of the nation.”

Happy birthday to an ardent believer of karlmax theory of socialism, historical materialism, sanitary executor, justice of peace …ors.
In 2020 while contesting for the office of the Vice President of NANS in Abuja,l experienced a part of Distinguished Senator Effiong Bob that has got me thinking of how possible l could be him,or possibly improve.
Never judge a man from a far.
When the election didn’t go my way,he was the first person l called,l had thought he will be very disappointed in me, especially for a man who isn’t familiar with the ways of NANS politics!
“Sir,l couldnt win the election” l stuttered. “Pick up yourself, take the first flight home tomorrow, remain focused, the future is bright for you” Bob said gently. You can imagine the relief, you can imagine how strong l became suddenly. But l had another fear, now that l have not won, will he pick my calls again, will he identify with me again? Majority of politicians in this State only identify with you when you are occupying one office or the other, most of them dump you the moment the office and relevance leave. I had thought Bob was among them, but Bob belongs to the class of picking you from nothing and place you up there. There is no doubt about this, he has it repeatedly and l have lost counts. Surprisingly,l called him after a week and he picked even with more compassion, his voice was still very lovely and his words to me that day have kept me going.
Just like me,many people have experienced this knowing Bob,some unlike me have not spoken out, while many have voiced out the good works of Bob.
Today Bob is 62 but he looks younger,he looks smarter,he looks fresher. Truth is,he has got no fears,he has got no worries,he has enjoyed the Grace of God.
For a man who can identify with anyone in all season, for a man who keeps encouraging young people to climb the ladder of success, for a man who has inspired generations, for a man who has affected humanity positively for years now,for a man who has lived his life for others, for a man who has defended the right of others for a very long time, for a man who has made his family a model in the country, for a man who loves God,l join million of Nigerians to say Happy birthday.
Bob doesn’t need anything to identify with you,l have lost the number of people he has picked from nothing to the top,l have lost the number of people he has given employment,l have lost the number of projects has done for humanity! For a man who has done all this, wouldn’t you spare your time to wish him a happy birthday!! Truly,Bob is a symbol of humanity at it’s best.
My father once told me that in their days, employers used to come scout for brilliant graduates from tertiary institutions and so, having credentials was the passport to a better life.
Fast forward to today – skills have taken the lead as the new passport to better life. Employers today want skills above several other considerations. So then, what do we do? Acquire skills.
What this means is, without skills, we cannot achieve much as individuals and as a collective or remain relevant in the 21st century skill economy, but what if we are willing yet unable to afford the acquisition of skills?
Enter The New Breed (TNB) – an NGO with great interest in human capital development, electing to train for free a targeted minimum of 10,000 Akwa Ibomites on various sellable entrepreneurial skills, with 300 beneficiaries already billed for graduation in the first batch.
This move is geared towards growing a productive population and churning out individuals ready, capable and available for the 21st century labour market, as well as achieving a full entrepreneurial state with ripple effects on the state’s economy.
