BUREAU OF PUBLIC PROCUREMENT DEFENDS 2024 BUDGET PROPOSAL BEFORE REP IDEM’S COMMITTEE
The House of Representatives Committee on Public Procurement has promised to intensify its oversight functions to strengthen the Bureau of Public Procurement to build and sustain an efficient procurement system that meets international best practices.
Chairman of the committee and member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Rep Unyime Idem, made the promise in his opening remarks during the budget defence session of the bureau at the National Assembly complex, Abuja.
Idem reminded the Bureau that the exercise is “in fulfilment of the Constitutional provision that mandates Committees of the National Assembly to scrutinize the annual budget of MDAs under their jurisdiction, as provided for, in the 1999 Constitution (as amended) stipulated in Section 81(1).”
He also emphasized the vital role the Committee on Public Procurement plays in the eradication of corruption in the country, noting that “most of the corruption cases in the country can be traced to Procurement processes.”
The Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal lawmaker therefore reiterated the need for continuous cooperation of the Bureau of Public Procurement to enable the committee work harmoniously to ensure that all MDAs observe due process, transparency and accountability in the procurement of goods and services to ensure that all tax payers money are accounted for and spent judiciously.
Idem also reminded the Bureau that the National Assembly is working on the Amendment of the Public Procurement Act 2007 to reflect present day realities and to meet best practices.

ALAKE BRIEFS SENATE SOLID MINERALS COMMITTEE, CANVASSES DATA
…Committee Chairman, Ekong Sampson assures Senate will partner for solid minerals development to diversify economy
By Samuel Udoma
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Senator Ekong Sampson has assured that the Senate will partner with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to further develop the sector, boost and diversify the economy.
Senator Sampson stated this when the Senate Solid Minerals Committee held an interactive meeting with the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, earlier today at the National Assembly.
The mood was very warm and convivial between the Senate Committee and Minister Alake, who came with a strong retinue of entourage, including the Permanent Secretary, Dr Grace Ogbe, and a number of Directors.
Earlier on arrival, Dr. Alake had paid a courtesy visit on Senator Sampson in his office, where they compared notes and enjoyed banters. Both Sampson and Alake share a rich background in journalism. Both men spoke with depth and range during the interchanges.
At the interactive session, Senator Sampson, flanked by his Vice Chairman, Senator Mustapha Khabeeb, and other members of the Committee, said that God in his benevolence had blessed Nigeria with enormous minerals buried in the earth around us, noting that with proper legislation, funding and collaboration, the sector can provide the country with the much needed diversification and revenue.
Senator Sampson, affirming the sentiments of other members of the Committee who spoke, reassured that the 10th Senate will give the Ministry adequate support to help unbox the true potentials of the nation’s solid minerals sector.
Earlier in his briefs, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, while interacting with the Senate Committee, canvassed the deployment of elaborate geoscience data to fast-track the growth and deepen investment in the sector.
Alake reeled out a number of interventions and programmes being laid out as areas of priorities for the Ministry. Some of these include establishment of Nigerian Solid Minerals Company Limited, joint venture with mining multinationals, integration of illegal miners into artisanal cooperatives, reinvigoration of Mines Surveillance Task Force and Policing, among others.
After the interaction session, both Senator Sampson and Dr. Alake joined at the Appropriations Committee’s budget defence and evaluation for Ministries and MDAs. The session was headed by the Chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Solomon Adeola.
REP. IDEM EMPOWERS CONSTITUENTS WITH FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT IN THE PRESIDENCY
The member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Unyime Idem, has secured employment for two of his constituents in the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, an agency of the Federal Government, under the Presidency.
The beneficiaries are Dr. Cosmas Augustine Udom and Mr. Aniekut Amos Umoh.
This, according to Rep. Idem, is in fulfillment of his campaign promise that he will use his office and contacts to facilitate federal jobs for his constituents.
Rep. Unyime Idem, while handing over the letters of employment to the beneficiaries at his residence in Uyo, charged them to be good ambassadors of the federal constituency and Akwa Ibom state in their place of work.
Idem, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Public Procurement, reiterated his resolve to use his office and connection to push as many Akwa Ibomites as possible into Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.
According to him, “it is my firm believe that in the next 10 to 15 years, we will have Akwa Ibomites as directors, permanent secretaries and others in top management positions in the federal government. This way, we’ll be sure to drag federal presence, projects and programmes to Akwa Ibom state and lessen the burden on the state government.”
Recall that just yesterday, the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal lawmaker handed over letters of employment to three of his media aides, having secured jobs for them in the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, another agency of the Federal Government.
He urged the people of Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency to remain hopeful and pray for him and others at the federal and state governments to succeed, assuring that more opportunities will be unveiled in the coming weeks and months.
REP IDEM REWARDS MEDIA AIDES WITH FEDERAL APPOINTMENT INTO NIGERIAN TELEVISION AUTHORITY (NTA)
The Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Rep. Unyime Idem has rewarded three of his media aides by facilitating their employment into the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA.
Consequently, Rep. Idem presented them with their letters of employment at his residence in Uyo on Saturday evening.
In his brief remarks after presenting the letters of employment, Rep. Unyime Idem said the gesture was in fulfillment of his campaign promise to push for his constituents to get jobs in Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.
According to the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal lawmaker, “as chairman of the Public Procurement Committee, I interface with a lot of MDAs everyday, and so far, I’ve been able to meet only two permanent secretaries and four directors who are from Akwa Ibom state. This is far cry from what it should be.
It breaks my heart that in Abuja, during my interactions with these government MDAs, I rarely see Akwa Ibomites.
So, it is my resolve to ensure that a lot of my constituents and by extension, Akwa Ibomites are enlisted into the Federal Civil Service, so in the next 10 to 15 years, we will have Directors and Permanent Secretaries and others occupying management positions in MDAs.”
Rep. Idem therefore urged the beneficiaries to be good ambassadors of the Federal Constituency and the state, assuring that he will facilitate more employment opportunities for his constituents in the coming weeks and months.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Etieno Ibanga, thanked Rep. Idem profusely for facilitating their employment into the NTA, an agency of the federal government, assuring that they will be good ambassadors of the federal constituency and the state.
REPS SPEAKER, TAJUDEEN ABBAS DESCRIBES LATE HON. NKEREUWEM DAN AS TRUE BEACON OF HOPE FOR HIS COMMUNITY, CONDOLES FAMILY AT FUNERAL
Rep. Idem arrived funeral ground with entourage.
Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has condoled the family of Hon. Nkereuwem Okon Dan, over the passing of their father, who represented Abak Federal Constituency in the Third Republic.
Rt. Hon. Abbas extended his condolences at the funeral service of the former federal legislator, which was held on December 2, 2023, at the Mercy Hospital field, Abak, Akwa Ibom state.
Represented by the member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Rep Unyime Idem, the Speaker mourned the passage of the man who described as a “community leader and an influential figure who dedicated his life to serving his people and making a positive impact on our society.”
According to Rt. Hon. Abbas, “From His mini profile, it is very clear that Late Hon Nkereuwem was a true visionary leader and a beacon of hope for his community. His unwavering commitment to public service and his tireless efforts in championing the rights and welfare of his people will forever be remembered.
The Speaker stressed that beyond his political accomplishments, the Late Hon Nkereuwem was a compassionate and empathetic individual who truly cared about the well-being of others.
The Late Hon. Nkereuwem Dan was a member of the National Assembly in the Third Republic and represented Abak Federal Constituency under the platform of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, but later joined the All Progressives Congress, APC, where he was an active member of the APC Elders Forum in Abak Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, until his death.
HOW REP IDEM OFFERED SELF AS PROTOTYPE IN HIS CONSTITUENCY, THE STATE AND NATION.
Series I.
As though Richard M. Nixon foresaw Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem’s antecedents when this wonderful quote was dropped; Idealism without pragmatism is impotent. Pragmatism without idealism is meaningless. The key to effective leadership is pragmatic idealism.
Such has been the philosophy of the people’s representative since he took over the mandate to represent Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal constituency in the National Assembly.
Four years and some months ago when Rep. Unyime Idem transited from the Telecommunications Sector to Politics, people had reservations on what the outcome of his political journey will be, many had wondered what he had to offer with little or no knowledge of Nigerian Politics.
These thoughts brought confusions in the heart of many to which aspirant will exercise mandate of the electorates without bias, timidity and fearfulness, leading to divisions amongst the electorates.
Being a first timer with the political will and passion to salvage his people, he accepted what could be termed Pre/Post election brouhaha and never gave up.
Categorically, it could be concluded that the mandate was sluggishly allotted him by the electorates which got him sworn as first timer at the National Assembly.
And the shocking story surfaces when Rep Idem’s campaign promises were fulfilled within 100 days in office, schools were renovated with newly constructed classroom blocks, ICT centres were built, fully funded and donated, countless scholarship were awarded, the depressed, vulnerable and homeless had their prayers fulfilled.
What electorates/constituents never encountered in the history of National Politics took precedence, bursary paid to students, internal roads with bridges were constructed, a different form of empowerment visited which got every household empowered in sequence and still counting.
Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem fulfilled the essence of democracy, bringing governance closer to the people.
Senate to Harness Solid Minerals to Boost Nigeria’s Economy, says Ekong Sampson
…holds inaugural meeting as Chairman, Senate Solid Minerals Committee
By Samuel Udoma
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Senator Ekong Sampson has assured that the 10th Senate will work vigorously to help harness Nigeria’s vast mineral endowments to boost the economy and drive prosperity for all Nigerians.
Senator Ekong Sampson Ph.D stated this on Thursday 30th November, 2023 when he Chaired the inaugural meeting of the Committee on Solid Minerals Development, at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
Recall that on November 2023, at Senate Plenary, Senator Ekong Sampson was announced as Chairman of the Committee on Solid Minerals by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
At a meeting of the Committee today, Sampson noted that the country’s solid minerals and extractive industry was very vast, yet grossly under-tapped. He said that Nigeria was richly blessed with huge mineral deposits that needed to be properly exploited for economic gains.
‘These minerals are strategically scattered all over the country. Nearly every Local Government Area in Nigeria can boast of mineral deposits buried in the bowels of the earth around us’, adding that the mining sector has the potentials of contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP.
Senator Sampson said that developing the solid minerals base of the country can offer the Nigerian economy, the much-needed diversification it has been yearning for. He highlighted that the ‘vast endowments should be used to drive prosperity for all Nigerians, not abused to fuel insecurity, exacerbate economic dislocation and opportunity theft’.
Senator Sampson, who is a former Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources in Akwa Ibom State, noted however, that a number of factors have continued to hamper the growth of the mining sector. He identified some of these factors to include activities of illegal miners and inadequate regulations, pledging the resolve of the Committee to intervene in these areas.
The Akwa Ibom South Senator lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for showing desire to develop the nation’s Solid Minerals sector, adding that the Senate through the Committee, will give the President, all the needed support.
Other members of the Committee who spoke including Vice Chairman, Senator Mustapha Khabeeb, former Chairman and now Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, Senator Diket Plang, Senator Onawo Ogoshi, and others, promised to work in unison with the Committee Chairman to take the country’s solid minerals sector to its rightful place.

HENSEK – A Consummate Engineering Force in Nigeria
By Samuel Udoma
Kudos to Hensek from Aks Governor, Pst. Eno
HENSEK Integrated Services – the Nigerian construction giant has blazed many trails in engineering excellence and innovation in the country. HENSEK’s unparalleled work ethic, professionalism and timely delivery on projects has also elevated the trust on indigenous contractors in Nigeria.
Since emerging as a tiger on the scene of engineering in Akwa Ibom State, which hitherto, was almost an exclusive reserve of foreign firms, HENSEK has been shooting for the skies. The company has equally inspired a generation of new other indigenous firms, including U&K – who is earning praises for its work on the remodeled CKS Primary School, Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo.
Another of HENSEK’S major contribution to Akwa Ibom and Nigeria at large is the provision of employment and skilled manpower to the teeming youth population. Nearly one hundred percent of HENSEK’S staff are Nigerians, with a large chunk being Akwa Ibomites. At HENSEK, these workers are honing their professional skills, technical know-how and project management resumé. HENSEK has basically taken thousands of youths off the street and given them sustainable livelihood.
The success of the HENSEK brand is embodied by the MD/CEO himself – Engr. Uwem Stephen Okoko. Okoko, a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, is the epitome of accomplishments and social humanism. He is the archetypal Go-to-guy for anyone who desires to ‘get the job done’.
Engr. Okoko clearly belongs in the pantheon of engineering greats in Nigeria at the moment. Here is a man who combines a great sense of duty with immense social capital. He is often lauded for his work and for his deep philanthropy. One will always see the imprimatur of HENSEK on every laudable initiative in Akwa Ibom State.
The construction imprints of HENSEK dot the canvass of Akwa Ibom State. From the well loved, state of the art, ‘Ring Road 3’, to the exquisite ‘Ring Road 2’ to hundreds of kilometers of superbly delivered roads, the refurbished Akpan Andem Market, HENSEK has become a toast in the lips of Akwa Ibomites.
Therefore, it is only fitting that we continue to celebrate HENSEK, the Man and his Brand – who have become a Siamese pride of Akwa Ibom State and beyond. And as I have always said of Him, excellence is only, but a call to greater service. Cheers HENSEK!
