GOV ENO READS RIOT ACT TO COMMUNITIES IMPEDING DEVELOPMENT WITH ILLEGAL STRUCTURES

…says duly certified structures would attract compensations

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has warned individuals and groups obstructing development projects with hurriedly erected and illegal structures in the state, hoping to attract compensation from government, to desist from such act as his administration would only pay compensation on duly certified structures.

Governor Eno read the Riot Act, Sunday, at his home town while addressing the congregation at the Apostolic Church, Ikot Ekpene Udo in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area where he, accompanied by his wife, Pastor (Mrs) Patience Eno, worshipped in an interdenominational thanksgiving service to commemorate his success in the last general elections.

Governor Eno who faulted the indiscriminate upsurge of unwarranted structures on roadsides of the community, described the act as anti- development borne out of greed to rob government of funds, and ordered owners of the unsolicited buildings to dismantle them with immediate effect.

“Please, to those of you who have heard me saying that we are going to construct roads, thank God our traditional Rulers and specifically the Village heads of these communities are here. I want to use this occasion to appeal to all those raising illegal structures by the road with the hope of getting compensation to please desist from such actions.

“This is a very serious warning, if we come with a project to your community and you obstruct it because of compensation, we will leave and take the project to another community.

“I will not struggle to help the people of this community. If we come to your local Government, Village or Community for development, you should receive and encourage us. We are prepared to develop the rural areas. We are prepared to work but let it be that when we come, we don’t meet resistance in any form.

“I am a peace loving Governor. I will not have any strength to fight with the youths but that does not mean we will run whenever it is necessary to fight. I am not expected to fight and force development on you. A Local Government or Community that gives us the enabling environment is where we will develop.

“It is not out of place to pay compensation for the old existing structures but for the hurriedly constructed buildings we will not pay”, he warned.

Recalling how he was prevented from building a ware house in his community by youths during his days as a member of the state Executive Council in the immediate past administration, he emphasized that communities that are not ready to embrace development would forfeit such projects to others with need for such developments.

He therefore directed Local Government Council Chairmen across the state to make available hundred hectares of land in their domains for development projects, explaining that the move is to enable his administration take development to the grassroots as enunciated in the A.R.I.S.E. Agenda of his administration .

“I remember when I was in the Ministry of Lands And Water Resources, I asked each Local Government to give us land for Agriculture, it was only eleven Local Government that complied.

“Now, I am appealing again to all Local Government Chairmen, please give us land not less than one hundred hectares. Send us the land plans through the Secretary to the State Government and see if we will not come there and develop it for the benefit of the people of that local Government.

The state Chief Executive expressed appreciation to the people for the support given him that saw to his emergence as governor in the last general elections and particularly commended the church for coming together with other denominations to thank God for his success at the polls.

He premised the choice of The Apostolic Church, Ikot Ekpene Udo, for the thanksgiving service on the expansive auditorium which has accommodated the guest worshippers as well as the community being his ancestral birth place, saying that his parents are from the community and the church is his ancestral church.

He particularly appreciated the people of the community for accepting the throne of leadership through their massive support, noting that if he had faced rejection from the people his ambition would have suffered a set back.

“We needed to come and share fellowship with our brethren in my very home of birth, Ikot Ekpene Udo.
It is very significant for us because my both parents are from this village, though from different areas. The truth is that we are all one. I thought it wise to come home first to say thank you to the people of this land that did not reject this throne.

“You know, there are situations that your land can reject you. You don’t know the speakings that has gone on this Land. Sometimes, the world may find delight in honouring you but your land would not agree. I tell you this as a pastor and not a politician. The world may choose to give you honour while the land of your birth can say no.

“So for this land to accept this honour that God has done us, we have come to say to the people of Ikot Ekpene Udo and pastors that prayed for us, thank you. We really appreciate your sacrifices that brought us to where we are today.

“This is only an opportunity. I may not be able to go round all churches one by one, but that does not mean I won’t honour your invitation when necessary.

“We chose the Apostolic Church for this occasion for two reasons. One is because The Apostolic Church is my local Church and the second is because it has the largest auditorium among all the churches in Ikot Ekpene Udo. We will continue to maintain this good relationship that we have established in the course of this great journey. Thank you very much and God bless you”, he stated.

He also paid glowing tributes to the late former Paramount Ruler, Edidem James Obot, who was murdered in cold blood, and thanked God for raising him to continue from where the royal father stopped.

He donated a purse in aid of the church building project and gave an undisclosed amount to the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members serving in the community who were visibly present at the service.

Lending her voice to Governor Eno , the state’s First Lady, Pastor (Mrs) Patience Eno, expressed gratitude to the women and her In-laws for the support given their son to emerge Governor of the state and prayed God’s blessings on them .

Preaching on the theme “A man After God’s Heart” the Area Superintendent of the Church, Apostle E.E. Inyang, who culled his message from Acts 13 verse 17- 22 and 1st Samuel 16:3,13 admonished that a man after God’s heart is diligent in his ways, humble in the Lord, and depends fully on God.he said such a man who is led by the spirit of God, enjoys God’s favour, protection, blessing, does not stop his journey halfway, and is compassionate and generous to the less privileged.

The Apostolic clergyman disclosed that Governor Umo Eno is imbued with these qualities and prayed God to guide him to realize his dreams for the benefit of the state.

Highpoints of the service was conferment of ‘The Joshua Award’ on the Governor to enable him lead the state, and ‘The Phoebe Award’ on the state first lady, Pastor Patience Eno, to strengthen her in her supportive role to the first family.

With the Governor at the service was a delegation comprising the Deputy Governor, Dr Akon Eyakenyi ; Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah and wife; Speaker of House Of Assembly, Hon Udeme Otong and wife, Deputy Speaker Rt. Corrective Legislative Approach Will Earn 10th Senate Public Confidence, says Ekong Sampson

By Samuel Udoma

Senator Ekong Sampson, representing Akwa Ibom South in the National Assembly, has called for corrective legislative approach from the Senate on matters of the state, stating that such will earn the 10th Assembly, public confidence.

Senator Sampson said this at the Senate plenary yesterday while contributing to a motion by Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East.

Senator Bassey in his motion, had called on the Senate to investigate the controversial Make-Up Gas (MUG) reprocessing deal involving the Federal Ministry of Finance, Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Calabar Generation Company Limited and Aquagas Limited.

According to Senator Bassey, ‘the controversial MUG deal was devoid of transparency and allegedly involved the payment of huge sums of money as fees to Transactions Advisers even when Aquagas Ltd was reportedly discussing the extension of the sunset date for the utilization of the MUG without the involvement of paid consultants or Transaction Advisers with an addendum to the Gas Supply Agreement (GSA) already signed between the parties’.

Senator Bassey prayed the Senate to set up an Ad-Hoc Committee with a mandate to investigate the circumstances under which the GSA and MUG arrangement was executed, the parties involved, payments so far made to entities to date and the status of implementation of the GSA – which involves a whooping $10million monthly Take-or-Pay Obligation clause by the Federal Government to Aquagas.

Also at the plenary, the Senate resolved to investigate the circumstances leading to the concession of the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja alongside other aviation related matters in the country.

The Senate’s decision followed a motion titled, “Urgent Need to Reverse the Concession of Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano”, sponsored by Senator Kawu Sumaila, (NNPP, Kano South). The plenary presided over by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, resolved to carry out a holistic investigation on the matter as soon as the Committee on Aviation was constituted.

In his contribution, Senator Ekong Sampson, who represents an oil and gas rich senatorial district in Akwa Ibom State, observed ‘great merit in the motion as framed and canvassed by Senator Aniekan Bassey’.

In his support for the motion, Senator Sampson declared:

‘We all know the importance of the power sector in this country. It is fitting that this Senate has adopted a corrective approach to legislative business. Our corrective posture will earn us the needed public confidence.

‘The issues raised by the motion are very weighty. Huge sums of money are involved. It is important that we exercise our investigative powers in a matter as this. So there is clearly merit in this motion and I want to support the spirit that has driven the motion’, he added.

Senator Sampson maintained that the Senate’s interest in such a motion will do the country great good. Sampson noted that the motion ‘situates well within the parameters’ of the 10th Senate as an investigative parliament.

He said that the vision of his administration would best be interpreted through the A.R.I.S.E. Agenda which is anchored on rural and agricultural development, stressing that the basic step to translating the vision to reality is by working the talk on RAAMP which seeks to create access in the rural communities for production and marketing of agricultural products.

He expressed appreciation to the World Bank and RAAMP, for their partnership which he acknowledged, has charted a way forward for the A.R.I.S.E Agenda blueprints, explaining that the project was nurtured to fruition by previous administration, and that his administration is only consolidating on the past initiative.

“Let me begin by appreciating the people of Nsit Ibom and Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government areas for voting overwhelmingly for us in the just concluded election.

“We thank you for your commitment and for enabling us to bring to bear, the vision that we have for Akwa Ibom State through our A.R.I.S.E Agenda. I can never thank you enough, may God bless you real good.

“We are committed to ensuring that we keep to our social contract with you. By the Grace of God, we will do our very best to implement the programmes as encapsulated in our A.R.I.S.E Agenda.

“I would like to thank and appreciate the World Bank and by extension, the Management of Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project(RAAMP) for working with us and ensuring that our partnership become very fruitful.

“Remember that as I have said earlier, this project started some years back. But you see, it is bearing fruits in our time and that for me is very significant.

“It means that everything we touch in this Administration will bear fruit. Thank you very much for keeping faith with us, and thank you for keying into our A.R.I.S.E. Agenda.

The Governor urged farmers in the benefiting local government areas to register with the Department of Agricultural Investment in AKICORP for proper documentation and accessment of soft loans for their agricultural ventures, warning that the farmers should not pay for the registeration as all the bills have been picked by the state government.

Speaking further , he said that the registration would facilitate the training of farmers in various skills for expansion of the agricultural revolution initiative of his administration and maintained that people with business acumen would enjoy to the detriment of the indolent ones in his administration.

“During the RAAMP project, there are other things that we did that will also further strengthen the work that we are doing.

“It was the state government that established the Ibom FADAMA Micro Finance Bank and it was meant to help our farmers by providing soft loans and grants for them. So I would like to plead with all farmers in Nsit Ibom and Ibesikpo Asutan to ensure that they are registered in the department of Agricultural investment in AKIPCORP so that we can have their data.

“I have been informed that some people are selling the forms. Believe me, one person has been arrested and we will make sure he vomits all the money he collected from people through falsehood.

“Please don’t pay a dime for the form. It is for free. The only condition is that we will come and know your farm and see what you do”, he explained.

Governor Eno announced plans to constitute the State Executive Council within the month, assuring that the road project would be completed as scheduled.

“Very soon, when we constitute the State Executive Council which we will do this month, we will ensure that we begin to work directly with our farmers and will make sure that sub loans and grants will go to them.

“We will do that through the Ibom Micro Finance Bank. We have our data base , we are going to transfer to Ibom FADAMA micro Finance Bank and we will do what we have to do to encourage you to farm.

“Before then, we will bring all our farmers together and train you in the various things you are doing. This is to help our Agricultural revolution initiative in the State.

“I assure you that the people who will not enjoy our government are those who are lazy; those who who do not want to work with their hands.

“Take my words, if you do something with your hands, this government shall profit you and do everything to encourage your profit and growth.

“Thank you for bringing us here and I promise you that this project shall be completed as scheduled and we will come back to commission it soon”, he stated.

On his part, representative of the National Coordinator RAAMP, Engr. Charles Ogongo, spoke of the mammoth crowd witnessed in the flag off ceremony as a testament of the acceptability of the project by Akwa Ibom people and expressed optimism that the project would be executed to completion.

UNENDING OVATION
FOR GOVERNOR ENOBy Tony Udoh Anthony Udoh

For many Akwa Ibom people, Sam J . Ervin, the former U.S. Senator from North Carolina who fondly refer to himself as a “country lawyer,” was specifically addressing the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno when he said, “a person who is worthy of being a leader wants power not for himself, but in order to be of service.”

Governor Umo Eno, for the past one month, has proven beyond reasonable doubt that his vision and aspiration for the top job in the state was not for himself but purely for service.

However, since previous articles had captured the events of previous weeks, effort is made here to stay focused on events of week four, which climaxed with seeming unending ovation.

For a governor who is approaching governance with a private sector mindset, every single minute of the day counts, that is why the governor would surprisingly moves straight to the office on return even from seemingly tiring trips within or outside the State.

As it is in his character, upon return to the State after his visit to the Turkey Embassy for a partnership talk, he moved straight to the office where engagements on the establishment of Akwa Ibom Medical City, a combo medical and hospitality corridor between the Ibom Multi – Specialist Hospital, Uyo, and the Four Point By Sheraton, Ikot Ekpene was initiated.

Establishing a medical corridor within that location was one of the campaign promises of Pastor Eno, which according to him, as elucidated during his campaign at Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, is aimed at maximizing the Ibom Multi – Specilist Hospital and the Four Point by Sheraton Hotel and to create job opportunities for Akwa Ibom people.

To ensure a safe environment across the state, the governor met with key players in the environmental sub-sector where he restated his administration’s resolve to partner the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to checkmate ecological challenges in the state.

While declaring open the Disaster Preparedness and Risk Reduction Strategies on the Outcome of the 2023 Season Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook, the governor expressed appreciation for the collaboration between Nigerian Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET), and Nigerian Hydrological Services (NIHSA), agencies in their service delivery, saying that the union has open a new vista towards averting mistakes that was done in the past in the area of disaster management. He further noted that it is a common approach in the State for Ministries and Agencies to work together to achieve the same purpose and bring benefits to the state.

Still on keeping to his campaign promises, the governor led a strong state delegation to flagged off the construction of Ndiya Street, Drainage and Solar Lighting Project in Akpan Andem Market withinUyo metropolis.

To continuously connect with the people in line with his promise to bring government closer to the people, the governor punctuated his convoy at different points to interact, encourage, and patronize vendors at some strategic points.

This, according to many, is a rare development in a country where politicians were only seen patronizing street traders during their electioneering period. This has therefore earned him different heart-warming reputatio, including ; “street governor,” and “the peoples’ governor,” among others.

Despite his busy schedules, the governoror took out time to identify and celebrate with one of his support staff, former Miss Mary Ekeng Udoma, as well as the publisher of a local newspaper, Global Concord, Mr. Thomas Thomas who walked down the aisle with their partners, Pastor Aniekan George Inyang and Miss Itoro respectively.

These show of solidarity, affection and encouragement to people of the State were extended on Sunday to the Anglican Bishop of Uyo Diocese, Rt. Rev. Prince Asukwu Edet Antai, and wife, Dame Victoria Antai, who both retired as the Bishop of Uyo Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) and President of Women Ministries of the Church respectively.

Similarly, the governor also identified and celebrated with the Chairman of Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Hon Ekopimo Polycarp and family at the dedication of their twin children, where he used the opportunity to advise LG chairmen to take charge and ensure peace and security in their respective domains.

In all, a seeming hat-trick was scored with a sustained ovation at the Victor Attah International Airport when the governor led a strong State delegation to receive the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio who arrived the state for the first time since he was elected president of the 10th Senate.

In demonstration of his resolve to ensure an all inclusive governance and to put the State above self, the governor who had earlier visited and celebrated with Senator Akpabio, elegantly stormed the airport and warmly received the Senate President whom he said is the pride of the State.

These evidently confirmed that Governor Eno is ready and willing to serve the State and not self, and has attracted ovations, which is still reverberating in unimaginable frequency across the State, and even beyond.

How Ekong Sampson Has Begun His Senate Representation on Good Note

By Theophilus Akpan

It’s already four days since the Distinguished Senator representing Akwa Ibom South in the Nigeria’s Red Chambers, Sen. Ekong Sampson was sworn-in as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

The after-party held in honour of the former Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources was epic and rich in content. The Bolton White Apartments&Event Centre, Wuse Zone 7, Abuja – one of the biggest event centres in the FCT, was agog with personalities of no mean repute.

Sen. Ekong Sampson didn’t disappoint in wearing his bridge building mien as he gathered ‘big names’ in Nigerian politics, across party affiliation and spread across walks of life. The party was adjudged to be one of the thickest receptions of the day in terms of personalities, excellent planning, locale, time and numbers of persons who graced the event.

Yes. Talking about bridge building, it should be recalled that the promise to build bridges to marry the different spectrums of ethnic nationalities in the senatorial district became a mantra during Ekong Sampson’s campaign tours across the Eket senatorial district.

Senator Sampson kept stressing that “we can only maximize the advantage of our rich mix – the Oro, Obolo, Ekid, Ibibio, when the right bridges are built to accommodate the pluralistic and diverse nature of the senatorial district”. He added that his mission was to unite the different strata in Akwa Ibom South and ‘tell our fuller stories on the floor of the Senate’.

Beginning to walk the talk, Sen. Sampson converged an assemblage of stalwarts from across party lines at his reception. Top of his bridge building demeanor was seen in his his invitation of former Gubernatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akwa Ibom State, Obong Nsima Ekere and former Minister, Mr Don Etiebet, both being active bigwigs in the APC. Etiebet hails from Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District.

It was uncommon, at least, in this part of the world, having stakeholders of other political parties attend political events organized by members of another political party. Ekong Sampson did it effortlessly. It wasn’t a surprise to many though, considering his famed bridge building disposition.

The Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin believes in “handshake across borders”. In his speech during the reception ceremony, the former two-term State Assembly member hinted that he has reconciled with all his opponents, from the party primaries to the general elections and that all of them have promised to support him to offer effective representation by offering advice when necessary.

In his speech, the former Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr Nsima Ekere did not hesitate to confess that Distinguished Senator Ekong Sampson has helped him to reconnect with several men and women of valour in the PDP whom he had not had the privilege to meet for the past eight years. Obong Nsima Ekere left the PDP in 2015 where had risen to become the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State and joined the APC where he became the Gubernatorial candidate during the 2019 general elections.

It is worthy of note that due to Dr Sampson’s affinity for peace and unity, all his opponents who challenged his declaration as the winner of February 25, 2023 Akwa Ibom South Senatorial election have voluntarily and unconditionally withdrawn their petitions against Barr Sampson from the tribunal. This means that nothing will distract Dr Sampson’s smooth take-off in his representation of his people.

Looking at the scheme of things in the senatorial district, one cannot but quick to judge that he had already commenced it on good note. Ekong Sampson Sampson awed the assemblage when he said in his speech that he has asked his Director-General of Campaigns, Sir Michael Essang to get offices in Oron, Eket and Ikot Abasi Federal Constituencies to aide access and equitable representation across the senatorial district.

Ekong Sampson, with the above, has scored an early goal in his Senate representation, and has caused his constituents and observers to affirm that Akwa Ibom South made the right choice by supporting him to go to the Senate and represent them.

Speaking glowingly on Dr Sampson’s demeanor in bringing people together, the Chairman on the occasion, former Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma noted that he was impressed when he walked into the hall and realized that almost everyone in Akwa Ibom State was in the hall. He noted that Sen. Ekong Sampson has begun on a very good note.

Sen. Udoma went further to make the following remarks;

“As many of you know, Dr Ekong Sampson has every rich experience, and when I was in the Senate, I was extremely impressed by his intelligence, because he worked for me as a Senior Legislative Assistant. I was impressed by his experience, acute legal mind, his quick grasp of any subject matter and his commitment to hard work. Indeed, having him as my Senior Legislative Aide was truly invaluable. And to top up his skills, he was also politically savvy. Some of the things you saw me doing in the Senate, it was because of people like him who helped me in doing a lot of underground work.

“Worthy of note, is the fact that, even though he was working with me in Abuja, he still kept in touch with his constituents back home. His politics has always been one of full identification with the grassroots. It was no surprise, therefore, that his first time of trying, he was elected as the Chairman of Council, and later on, State Assembly member and later on, appointed the Commissioner in several ministries in the administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel. And now, a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Akwa Ibom South.

“He is a great achiever. Everywhere he has gone, he has always performed. In every office he has handled, he excelled. He has served in executive position. He has served in legislative position. And in all of them, he has excelled. In addition, on top of all that, he has found time to complete his doctorial thesis. He has a doctorate degree in law. He has author many books. He a very talented man of many sides. And I must say, I cannot imagine any other person better qualified, better prepared to serve as the Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Senator Udoma Udoma submitted.

REPS DEMAND COMPLETION OF IKOT AKPA NKUK/NYAK IBA/USUNG ATIAT/IKOT AKPA IDEM/IKOT UDO MBANG ROAD IN UKANAFUN, AKWA IBOM STATE

Rep. Unyime Idem at the lower chamber.

The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to complete the 2.8 kilometre Ikot Akpa Nkuk/Nyak Iba/Usung Atiat/Ikot Akpa Idem/Ikot Udo Mbang road in Ukanafun local government area.

This follows a motion of urgent public importance presented on the floor of the house by the member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Hon. Unyime Idem today during plenary.

Idem noted that the road, which plays a paramount role in the economic development of the affected communities, the environs and neighboring states, has remained dilapidated for years.

He noted that the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing under its emergency intervention program, commenced the rehabilitation of the road in 2022 but abandoned it less than half way.

The ranking member of the house expressed concern that the abandoned road has caused untold hardship to commuters and residents of the communities adjourning the road due to its impassible nature, making it difficult for farmers to transfer their farm produce to the market.

According to Idem, the farmers have resorted to using alternative routes to evacuate their produce to the market, causing them to hike the price due to the cost of transportation.

The 10th House of Representatives therefore resolved that the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing should intervene urgently by completing the construction of the 2.8 kilometre Ikot Akpa Nkuk/Nyak Iba/Usung Atiat/Ikot Akpa Idem/Ikot Udo Mbang road to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.
