LEICA 2023: Dr. Wisdom Enang Advocates for a Just Energy Transition for Nigeria.

*** Wins a Prestigious Award of Excellence

SAMPSON ENYONGEKERE, Uyo

A renowned and resourceful Global Energy Expert, Engr. (Dr.) Wisdom Patrick Enang, has consciously advocated for a just Energy Transition from fossil fuel to the much-talked-about renewable energy like solar and hydro, for Nigeria.

The shrewd Oil and Gas Consultant made the plea on Thursday, April 13, at Four Points By Sheraton Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, venue of the Lawyers in Energy International Conference and Awards (L.E.I.C.A) 2023.

The two-day event themed “Economic Development and Sustainability of the African Energy Industry: Emerging and Evolving Concepts, Regulations and Opportunities”, lasted between Wednesday April 12 and Thursday April 13, with other notable experts and industry leaders in attendance.

Speaking alongside other industry leaders like Mr. Victor Okoronkwo (Managing Director of Aiteo), Mrs. Iroghama Ogbeifun (Managing Director of Starz Investment), amongst others, on the topic, “Africa Energy Demand: Efficiency and Availability”,
Dr. Wisdom Enang, who is an Adjutant Professor of the North Dakota University, USA, said that fossil fuels provides 80% of the world’s energy, and are undoubtedly the energy foundation upon which global societies function.

Dr. Enang stressed that a sudden change in the composition of that foundation could potentially destabilize the global economy, and key elements of modern society. He also emphasized that energy transformation is shaped by a much broader and fundamental shift in terms of prosperity, progress, politics and the environment, and listed decarbonization as one of the cornerstone of the huge transition.

The Bath University, United Kingdom trained Mechanical Engineer maintained that the ongoing transformation does not only concern and apply to the energy sector, or to the change from one fuel source to another, or merely a technological leap, as it was much broader, reflecting a change and transformation in terms of values and the way the world around us is understood, nowadays.

Dr. Enang further explained that the great transition features a gradual breakaway from the older core values of security, reliability, and robustness which existing energy systems were built upon, to new values of sustainability, flexibility and affordability which are enabled by a completely new way of producing, delivering and consuming energy.

He however stressed that this does not necessarily mean that the older frame of values will become obsolete or irrelevant anytime soon, but that the centre of weight was definitely rebalancing itself.

Dr. Wisdom Enang, who is both a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (FNISafetyE), emphasized that the clarion call for decarbonization was apt and comes sequel to critical global drivers, such as the Paris Agreement, Consumer Energy Needs and investor activism.

He revealed that the Paris Agreement signed in 2015 established a global framework to prevent dangerous climate change, by limiting global warming to well below 2°C, and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.

These goals he intimated, are set against the backdrop of several scientific findings such as that of the National Academy of Sciences, which concluded in a 2015 study that it is possible that some extreme weather events such as heat waves and droughts could be attributed to changing climate, due to global warming.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the BBC praised “Sarah Enang Humanitarian Foundation” averred that the consciousness for responsible energy exploitation has also been taken seriously by investors like Black Rock, the world’s largest fund manager with about $7 trillion (USD) of assets under management, who in 2020 declared, that “climate risk is investment risk”, and stated that the group will be selling their direct investment in companies which derives more than 25% of their revenues from thermal coal.

“While Black Rock’s strategy made headlines due to the fund’s size and influence, other investors were also pressuring companies to take more action on climate change”, he claimed.

He informed, that to enviornmentally conscious investors, a competitive portfolio will no longer be solely determined by its breakeven price, but also by its environmental impact, affirming that another noteworthy driver was the quest for higher flexibility, convenience and cleanliness of energy services demanded by customers, especially as income rises.

Dr. Wisdom Enang, who consults for a number of international and local energy companies, said that achieving a commercially attractive energy transition in Nigeria, will depend heavily on the use of existing oil and gas infrastructure which runs into billions of dollars in investment, and is adaptable, reliable and affordable. He explained that it will be a missed opportunity to not plan for the role of these already existing infrastructure in the Nigerian energy systems of the future.

Known for his massive advocacy for value-driven leadership, Dr. Wisdom Enang highlighted therefore, that the efficient repurposing of existing infrastructure remains a key imperative for decarbonizing the Nigerian energy sector in the most cost-effective approach, and maintained that the task of controlling energy related carbon emissions, as daunting as it may appear from today’s perspective, may in fact turn out to be less obstructive if indeed an acceleration of long-term structural change trends is called for, rather than a departure in an entirely new direction.

Hear him: “Substantial acceleration of decarbonization would thus entail both ambitious technological and policy levers. Policy declarations such as the “Nigerian Decade of Gas”, is a positive step in the right direction, as the exploitation of gas avails us with a more efficient and cleaner source of energy, compared to liquid petroleum.”

Dr. Enang, a fully registered and accredited Chartered Engineer with the British Engineering Council, explained that large scale decarbonization of the oil and gas sector to a near-zero target would be extremely difficult to achieve anywhere in the world, as there are very limited commercially viable options.

Other speakers who spoke during Dr. Enang’s panel discussion session include: Mr. Isreal Aye, a partner at Commercial and Energy Practice (CANDELP) as well as a Director at Aspen Energy Nigeria; Mrs. Raqeebah Oloko, Managing Solicitor of Bromshy Legal (An Energy Consultancy Legal Firm known for its exceptional legal Advice on Energy Transactions in Africa); Mrs. Iroghama Ogbeifun, Managing Director, Starz Investments Company Ltd and Mr. Victor Okoronkwo, Managing Director, Aiteo. Mr. Okoronkwo is also the Group Managing Director of Aiteo Exploration and Production Ltd, Nigeria’s foremost independent oil and gas company.

The highpoint of the event was the conferment of a prestigious Award of Excellence on Dr. Wisdom Enang, “for his numerous and highly valuable contributions to the development of the Nigerian Oil and Gas sector, which has helped shape the industry more positively”, Mr. Isreal Aye confessed, while conferring the Award on Dr. Enang.

CELEBRATING TOTAL CHAIR AT 70

Dear Chief Otu Ita Toyo,

Today, I am joining your family, friends, associates, and well-wishers to celebrate your 70th birthday. I celebrate the amazing grace of god upon your life. I celebrate your intelligence, dexterity, capacity, and humility.

Given the significance of turning 70, it is essential to contextualize why I am celebrating you today. I recall how you navigated the internal wrangling of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Akwa Ibom State-2006/2007 era. Your emergence as the State Chairman of the party did not sit well with some powerful persons, political brokers, and youth leaders in the state including myself, all of which were loyal to HE Arc. Victor Attah, as against your perceived (real or imaginary ) loyalty to abuja front. Hence, the stiff opposition against your emergence.

As events unfolded we came to appreciate your emergence because of the style, panache and dexterity you deployed in managing the complexities of the party at the time. Most importantly you stood firm to defend the victory of Chief Godswill Akpabio at the Party primaries in 2007. Despite the powers that be prevailing on you to deny and scuttle that victory, your strength of character, straight-forwardness, and integrity did not cause you to shift your stance. You defended that victory and the victory of the youths’ struggle in our state which the victory of Chief Akpabio represented. This greatly endeared me to you. Your unwavering stance despite huge financial inducement, betrayals, and attacks by some members of the State Working Committee of our Party further showed your strength and integrity.

When the dust settled, and Chief Akpabio’s government was formed, you were offered a critical appointment, but you turned it down, preferring to contest for a national position in our party. However, when it was time for our Party’s National Convention, I noticed that by political intrigues and schemings you were not favored to be presented as the candidate from the state for the position of the National Vice Chairman of the Party (South South). I was very bitter by what i saw and was emboldened by your contribution and sacrifice for the emergence of Chief Akpabio’s government and your insistence on justice and equity, to approach my then boss and mentor (Chief Godswill Akpabio) and requested him to have a conversation with you about your aspiration instead of behind your back schemings. Thank God my effort atleast led to a private meeting, the rest is history.

Since our paths crossed, I have seen firsthand your display of political dexterity, sagacity, and deep knowledge of political issues. You often discuss political events with accuracy, including dates, time, names of actors and characters, plots, and counter-plots. Your excellent command of language is legendary.

During my bid for the governorship of our dear State, you were readily available to offer me advice whenever I called on you. You have always treated me with kindness and cordiality, irrespective of our age difference. This is a testament to your humility and non-discriminatory attitude.

The story of my life will not be complete without you. Your contribution in the emergence of Chief Akpabio as Governor, which you stood your ground to defend, gave me a platform to serve in the public for a period spanning 16 years and still counting.

Your strengths, convictions, courage especially in adversity, your belief in the success of all generations most especially the younger generation, your readiness to impact knowledge, your easy-going life, your oratory prowess, your level of contentment, and many more are the reasons I celebrate you as you turn 70.

I pray God to grant you many more years and strength as our country in times like this needs men like you with decency in political communication. May your voice never dim.

Happy 70th birthday, my Total Chair.

Member Representing Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency

REPS STOPS NDDC FROM RELEASING N15 BILLION COUNTERPART FUNDING TO THE FG

….says NDDC Budget yet to be approved

The House of Representatives has mandated the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to put on hold the release of N15 billion counterpart funding requested by the Federal Government for humanitarian project. The House cited non budgetary provision for the said project and the time constraints in its execution.

This followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Rep. Unyime Idem, on the floor of the House of Representatives on Thursday April 6, 2023.

Speaking on the motion, the Ukanafun born lawmaker noted that the NDDC was established to attend to intervention and humanitarian needs as well as promote the physical development of the Niger Delta region. He however noted that these functions are carried out based on relevant laws of the land which has not been followed in the case of project in question.

“Aware that part of the fund available for use by the NDDC is money recovered on its behalf by EFCC and given to the Commission, to ease the implementation and its financial obligations. Cognizant that the Federal government sent a special request mandating the Ministry of Niger Delta to jointly finance an intervention and humanitarian programme of sums running into several Billions of Naira using the money recovered by the EFCC without budgetary provision” Idem said

Continuing, Idem noted that the NDDC Budget estimates for 2021, 2022 & 2023 is before the House for legislative approval hence the NDDC cannot release such funds to the Federal Government. He added that such request for intervention and humanitarian proposals by the federal government without requisite financial appropriation and approval by this honourable House is illegal and a breach of the Appropriation Act.

Rising in defense of the motion, the House of Representatives unanimously mandated the Niger Delta Development Commission to put on hold the release of N15 billion counterpart funding requested by the federal government, pending the approval of the Commission’s budget by the House.

It also mandated its committee on NDDC to scrutinize the request made by the federal government and report back to the house within 2 weeks.

Eulogies As Uyo Book Club Honours Ekong Sampson on Senate Victory, Udeme Nana Canvasses Book Economy

By Samuel Udoma

March 25, 2023 was yet another momentuous day in Uyo Book Club. It was the day the club, during its March Reading Session, celebrated her patron, Dr. Ekong Sampson on his Senate victory. Dr. Sampson, lawyer and writer is the Senator-Elect for Akwa Ibom South. He is one of the major backers of the book club culture, which has grown tremendously in the State over the past few years.

A former State Environment and Petroleum Resources Commissioner in the State, Dr. Sampson also sits as advisor to the Watbridge Group, whose facility Uyo Book Club has used for free for the past three years or so now. In his earlier years, he had served as Chief Legislative Assistant to the legendary Senator Udoma Udo Udoma. He was also a former Chairman of Council and later, two term State Lawmaker for Mkpat Enin. Sampson is making a spectacular return to the nation’s Red Chambers, where he started his political sojourn.

The William Shakespeare Hall of Watbridge Hotels as always, provided the perfect canvass for a book dinning. The hotel itself, has earned plaudits for its support for literacy and scholarship. It is the only hotel in this part of the world with a well stocked Guest Library, named after renowned writer, Ngugi wa Thiong’o. A book event in Shakespeare Hall is like a mass in the Sistine Chapel. The seclusion it offers, the sane aura, the adorning murals on the walls and its iconic naming gives Shakespeare Room a mystique.

Under reading floodlights and club members, the Hall in the evening of every last Saturday of the month, is usually a sort of an escape from the precipice of the everyday hustle and bustle – very calm, bare and withdrawn. So far, it has remained a standout location in Watbridge.

Uyo Book Club, founded by Dr. Udeme Nana, a media scholar and teacher, is apolitical. But for Sampson’s Senate ambition, the club had put a veil on its creed and openly endorsed the former Mkpat Enin Council helmsman for the top job. It was a bold statement. A pat on Sampson’s back from the literary community, egging him to go on, win and make the clan proud. Dr. Sampson has promised to take the book club culture to the National Assembly.

Saturday’s session was then indeed, an evening of eulogies for Barr. Sampson. The Senator-elect, through his victory, has earned few milestones on the way. He is the first Akwa Ibom writer-journalist to assume such a highly placed elective political office. Although a respected lawyer too, in the Senate, he will be among a few with close ties with the literary community.

He will however also, be hoisting the flag for lawyers, journalists, writers, poets and publishers. With Uyo Book Club also housing the younger generation of upcoming writers and students, the likes of Dr. Sampson are true role models. Dr. Bassey Ubong, well known writer and former Provost, College of Education, Omoku, Rivers State was also in attendance at the session.

Club founder, Dr. Udeme Nana in his congratulatory oration, lauded the Senator-elect Dr. Ekong Sampson on his ‘inspiring victory’. Dr. Nana described Sampson as an ‘Angel of the Book Club initiative’ and urged him to be an ambassador of the Books ecosystem in the the Senate and National Assembly. Dr. Nana, a former Senior Media Aide to former Governor, Victor Attah, noted that it was time Nigeria ‘explored trajectories in the book economy’. He stated that with proper funding and legislation, the book economy can boom and ‘just like oil, become a major revenue spinner for the nation’.

Responding, the Senator-elect for Akwa Ibom South, Dr Ekong Sampson expressed gratitude to Uyo Book Club for always standing by him in his Senate bid. He said he was buoyed by the waves of support he has received since his win, noting that he will do well to repay the confidence through effective representation.
Sampson stated that in the Senate, he will be representing a clan of writers and as such, can’t afford to fail. In his words:

‘Writers don’t fail. Politics is actually a super highway for service to humanity’. He charged more writers to get involved politically, so as to ‘help decongest the power traffic’.

‘Our society will get better when more writers get into elective and appointive positions’ Sampson said. The Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin promised to take the book club culture to the Senate, saying ‘Nigerians must be encouraged to read more’, while maintaining that he will always be there for the book club:

‘I’ll be coming here and taking part in your sessions. I’ll also be worrying you, as it were, for your inputs, because if there’s one group that can generate great inputs for the Senate, it is Uyo Book Club. So, I’m very proud to be a member of Uyo Book Club. I’m going to the Senate as your ambassador, as one of you. I’ll always be conscious that I’m representing a very important tribe, that will challenge me to do even better’.

Dr. Sampson equally took out time to offer insights into his drive in public service and leadership as well as the Nigerian question:

‘The tragedy of Nigerian democracy is that we spend a lot of time looking at our false lines. We tend to celebrate victories over battles, instead of victories over wars. So quite often, we win the battle and lose the war.

A time has come for Nigeria to look beyond immediate gains, look at how we can strengthen our institutions and firm up the democratic space. And ensure that not only do we have democracy, we also have good governance, because democracy without good governance is meaningless’, he said.

The club patron intimated that in due time, the book club can be having reading picnics in places like Abuja to further enrich and expand the reading consciousness.

To add spice, another patron of the club and in-house poet orator, Dr. Martin Akpan offered a rendition of Sampson’s ‘My Pen Is Pregnant’ in honour of the Senator laureate. Other members of the book club also took turns in eulogizing Barr. Sampson on his accomplishments. Highpoint of the day was the toast to a successful Senate tenure for Dr. Sampson by members of the club.

FEDERAL CHARACTER COMMISSION (ESTABLISHMENT, ETC) ACT AMENDMENT BILL SPONSORED BY REP IDEM PASSES SECOND READING.

The House of Representatives has read the second time and passed a bill for an act to amend the Federal Character Commission (establishment, etc) Act F7, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to make provisions for the appointment of the Chairman and Secretary from different regions of the country to reflect the principles of federal character.

Leading debate on the Bill, the Sponsor, Rep Unyime Idem said the importance of the bill to our national existence cannot be overstressed. He noted that the Act makes distinct provisions for the Presidential appointment of the Chairman of the Commission in Section 2 (2) of the Act and another crucial appointment by the President for the position of the Secretary in Section 9 (1) (b) of the Act. The Bill seeks to amend the provision of the Act to reinstate the position that the two critical positions to be appointed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria be expressly and mandatorily from each region of the Country for the effective running and administration of the objectives of setting up of the Commission.

“Mr. Speaker and my distinguished Colleagues, Nigeria is a vast and diverse nation to which there should be equal representation of all the regions. The Commission shoulders a huge responsibility of handling high volume of representation that requires the trust and confidence of the whole country. Having a regional representation would make the Commission equitable and efficient, thereby having a ripple effect on the developmental system of the country”

“The Rt. Hon. Speaker, my respected Colleagues, the need to amend the Federal Character Commission Act to put in place a Legal framework for the appointment of the two crucial positions of Chairman and Secretary of the Commission to be from the two regions of the Country, is a patriotic move which I believe should be supported by this Honorable House.”

The Bill was read for the second time and referred to the Committee on Federal Character for further character for further legislative action.

The Federal Lawmaker said the situation had brought hardship to air travellers. EKONG SAMPSON CONGRATULATES PASTOR UMO ENO, STATE ASSEMBLY WINNERS

…says democracy must unite, not divide, Akwa Ibom people; describes Umo Eno’s victory as emphatic and symbolic

By Samuel Udoma

Senator-elect for Akwa Ibom South, Dr. Ekong Sampson has congratulated Pastor Umo Bassey Eno on his victory and declaration by INEC as Governor-elect of Akwa Ibom State. Dr. Sampson has equally felicitated all the newly elected State House of Assembly members on their victorious outing in the recently announced polls. Furthermore, Barr. Sampson has stated that with the elections now come and gone, democracy must unite, rather than divide Akwa Ibom people.

Pastor Umo Eno, a business magnate and former Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources in the state was yesterday evening announced winner of the rescheduled March 18, 2023 Governorship election. Pastor Eno of the PDP, polled a total of 354,348 votes to defeat YPP, Bassey Albert, who scored 136,262 votes and APC Akanimo Udofia, who scored 129,602 votes. The Governor-elect in his post victory message has promised ‘happy times’ for the state.

In a message of felicitation to Pastor Umo Eno, Dr. Ekong Sampson hailed the Governor-elect on his ’emphatic and symbolic victory’ at the polls. He stated that ‘Pastor Umo Eno’s victory is indeed, a reflection of the collective wish of Akwa Ibom people as shown in the landslide win according to the results released’. Sampson praised Umo Eno as ‘an excellent man, rich in content, character and maturity’, noting that his emergence signposts greater times ahead for Akwa Ibom State.

According to the Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin, ‘in-law’, Umo Eno, ‘a man of peace and an accomplished entrepreneur will give Akwa Ibom good security and strong economy’.
Sampson expressed readiness to ‘work fruitfully with Governor-elect Umo Eno to advance the interest of Akwa Ibom South and our dear State’

In same vein, Dr. Sampson has also congratulated the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) family in the State alongside all the House of Assembly Members-elect for a momentous outing in Saturday’s election.
He said ‘the poll results clearly demonstrate that our party, the People’s Democratic Party is well loved by Akwa Ibom people’.

Barr. Sampson particularly congratulated the House Member-elect for Mkpat Enin, his home constituency, Hon. Uwem Imo-ita on his electoral victory. Hon. Imo-ita served as Councillor under Dr. Sampson when the former was Head of Council in Mkpat Enin. From the results announced, PDP won 24 out of the 26 House of Assembly seats in Akwa Ibom.

Barr. Ekong Sampson, a former two term State Lawmaker for Mkpat Enin also used the medium to offer insights into recent political issues in the state necessitated by the just concluded elections. Akwa lbom witnessed one of its most contentious election seasons in recent times in the just concluded polls with flared political emotions.

However, according to Dr. Sampson, ‘with the elections come and gone, it was time for all hands to be on deck to move the state forward’. The former State Environment and Petroleum Resources Commissioner opined that democracy such as ours, ‘must unite, not divide, Akwa Ibom people’. He noted that, as with his avowed philosophy, firm bridges must be built across the diverse interests in the State.

The Senator-elect again, expressed appreciation to the people of Akwa Ibom South ‘who have been kind enough to elect me to represent them in the Red Chambers’. Sampson reassured that he will work to protect the interest of the senatorial district and offer rewarding representation. He noted that ‘Akwa Ibomites have chosen that they are indeed, in for happier times’.

TOGETHER WE WON

Victory is sweet but winning as a team is better. Our victory became possible because we fought as a team.

On behalf of my wife and family, I sincerely appreciate the people of Oruk Anam for believing in the Peoples Democratic party (PDP), as demonstrated during the presidential/national assembly elections as well as the gubernatorial/State House of Assembly elections held on Saturday, February 25 and Saturday, March 18, 2023, respectively.

Out of the 28,046 votes cast during the last Saturday assembly elections, you graciously trusted me with 17, 670 valid votes, leaving the eleven other candidates with 10, 376 votes to share. The show of love was massive and I promise to reciprocate it with effective representation and meaningful empowerment.

I am particularly grateful to my mentor, father and State leader of our party, His Excellency, Mr Udom Emmanuel and his dear wife, Dr Martha Udom Emmanuel for giving me their shoulders to lean on and wings to fly. To the Aniekan Akpan-led administration of our party, thank you for giving me a reliable platform to contest.

Our citizenry across the 9 clans, 13 wards and 221 polling units of Oruk Anam LGA unanimously adjudged our campaigns to be issue-based, that’s because we had a competent campaign council. I am therefore grateful to the chairman of our campaign council and my Predecessor, Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan, the Director General, Hon. Dr. Paul Udofia, sub committee Heads and indeed all members of my campaign council for their sacrifices and contributions.

From the delegates who served as the biblical John the Baptist during our party primaries to my ever defensive agents who tarried to protect the materials, let me assure you that your labour shall never be in vain. You occupy a special place in my heart.

Reports from Domestic and International observers indicate that the elections in Oruk Anam were generally fair, peaceful and credible. I sincerely commend the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) and my constituents for their peaceful disposition. Please, let’s sustain the peace.

As we march into an era of new possibilities in Oruk Anam, I extend a hand of fellowship to other candidates to come let’s work together, even as I promise never to take for granted, the confidence reposed in me by the electorates.

Welcome to a golden era in Akwa Ibom State and a dawn of new possibilities in Oruk Anam.

WHY SAMPSON IDIONG REMAINS THE BEST ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE FOR ORUK ANAM – Campaign DG.

The Director General of Sampson Idiong campaign organisation and former commissioner for Education in Akwa Ibom state, Hon. Dr Paul Udofia says the candidate of the peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for Oruk Anam State Constituency, Prince Sampson Idiong remains the best amongst all candidates in the race.

Udofia who affirmed the superiority of Prince Idiong above other candidates while speaking with newsmen over the weekend, cited experience, intelligence, eloquence, relevant connection, antecedents and numerous philanthropic gestures as Idiong’s unique selling points.

He disclosed that only Idiong understands how to bring deliberate steps and actions to create big ripple effects that can impact on an economy and make life far more abundant to the Students, youths, women and Elders of Oruk Anam State Constituency.

The One time leader of Oruk Anam legislative council, recalled that as an Aide to Governor Emmanuel, prince Idiong oversaw inter-ministerial direct labour projects which gave rise to massive rehabilitation of several schools in Oruk Anam and Ikot Okoro general hospitals while creating direct and indirect jobs for Oruk Anam youths.

The PDP Chieftain who said there was no basis of comparing Sampson Idiong with other house of assembly candidates disclosed that “out of all the candidates, he is the only popular candidate with relevant experience in mainstream governance having work closely with two successive administrations in the state.

Meanwhile, whereever the youths and women of Oruk Anam gather to discuss about the March 18th assembly elections, political pundits posits that the name Sampson Idiong towers above his contenders.

According to them, the house of assembly hopeful in the past 8 years had been the most reliable bridge that connected Oruk Anam youths, women and Elders with the government of Akwa Ibom state.

“Sampson Idiong as a Governor’s Aide had donated boreholes to several communities, tricycles, motorcycles, cars to Constituents, grants to students and entrepreneurs as well as provided shelters for the widow and less privilege.” They stressed.

Umo Eno’s Victory Signposts Roadmap to Strong Economy, Security, says Ekong Sampson

… Onomkpoinam Mkpat says next National Assembly must unite to save Nigeria

By Samuel Udoma

With the 2023 gubernatorial election barely 48hours away, Senator-elect for Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Rt Hon.(Barr.) Ekong Sampson has stated that the eventual victory of Pastor Umo Eno will signpost roadmap to strong economy and security. Pastor Umo Eno, the PDP governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State has emerged as favourite to win Saturday’s election in the State.

Dr. Ekong Sampson has been very stoic in his support for Umo Eno, often citing the former Lands and Water Resources Commissioner as a man with rich content, humility and great personality. He noted that from Pastor Umo Eno’s track records, the Guber hopeful will give Akwa Ibom State, strong economy and security. Pastor Umo Eno, meanwhile, is married to a daughter of Mkpat Enin where Sampson hails from. Both have enjoyed warm friendship over the years.

Speaking with Newsmen just before departing for Abuja yesterday to receive his Certificate of Return as the Senator-elect for Akwa Ibom South, Dr. Ekong Sampson said that Pastor Umo Eno possessed the midas touch to build on the solid foundation laid by the Udom administration especially in deepening the economy and strengthening peace and security in the State.

Dr. Sampson analogized casually that anyone who can successfully run a hotel chain can replicate same feat anywhere and in any sector. The Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin said that Pastor Umo Eno has shown over the years through his antecedents that he was the man to take Akwa Ibom State to the next level. Sampson assured of the support of ‘in-laws’, Mkpat Enin and indeed, the entire Eket Senatorial District for Pastor Umo Eno in Saturday’s polls.

Meanwhile, the Senator-elect has also stated that the incoming National Assembly which was already taking shape must unite to save Nigeria. The nation is facing trying periods witnessed by economic downturns, growing polarization, insecurity, among other challenges, all of which Sampson believes, the new National Assembly must work to salvage and restore hope in Nigerians.

Barr. Sampson, who enjoyed great outing yesterday with his new colleagues during the collection of their Certificates of Return at the National Collation Centre, Abuja, noted that the richly diverse composition of the new National Assembly can help unite the country more and deepen bridge building. He expressed his eagerness to get started in the Red Chambers and work with like-minds to better the country.

Form of New Nigerian Senate Takes Shape as INEC Presents Certificate of Return To New Senators

…Ekong Sampson says new Senate has job in its hand

By Samuel Udoma (Abuja)

The Senator-elect for Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Dr. Ekong Sampson has received his Certificate of Return as winner in the February 25, 2023 National Assembly elections held across the country.

In a ceremony held at the exquisite dome of the International Conference Centre, Abuja, which served as the National Election Collation Centre earlier today, Dr. Sampson joined by wife, Matina and Dr. Chris Udoka, a Director at the PDP National Secretariat, received his Certificate from INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

It was a rich array of the newly elected and reelected Nigerian Senators, drawn from across a wide spectrum – from PDP, APC, Labour Party, YPP who had emerged victorious in the just concluded elections. Dr. Sampson, who is making an emphatic return to the National Assembly, after serving as Chief Legislative Aide to Senator Udoma Udo Udoma in the early 2000s, was bubbling with zest to resume again in the Red Chambers.

The Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin was his ever warm self at the National Collation Centre, exchanging pleasantries with current Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who was also making a return to the Red Chambers after a hiatus. Dr. Sampson also had moments with Chief Victor Umeh, Hon. Ned Nwoko, among others. Current Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and Senator-elect for Uyo Senatorial District, Rt Hon. Aniekan Bassey was also present.

Dr. Sampson, well noted for his bridge building disposition, was seen enjoying quality banters with his new colleagues in the Senate. Leadership of the 10th Senate, constitution of Committees, among other issues probably featured in the jovial chit-chats of the new Senators.

Meanwhile, the former State Environment and Petroleum Resources Commissioner, Akwa Ibom State has stated that the new Nigerian Senate has job in hand, considering the critical condition of the country at the moment. Speaking after receiving his Certificate of Return, Dr. Sampson said the 10th Senate ‘will have to rise to take Nigeria out of the woods’.

The Senator-elect noted that the diverse mix of the Senate can be used to an advantage to help douse growing polarization of the country. Sampson said he was looking forward to working with like-minds in the Senate to help move the country forward.

Umo Eno Will Revolutionize Akwa Ibom Rural Development Master Plan, says Ekong Sampson

…A/Ibom South Senator-elect canvasses support for PDP Candidates ahead of Saturday’s Polls

By Samuel Udoma

The Senator-elect for Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Dr Ekong Sampson has said that Pastor Umo Eno will revolutionize the Akwa Ibom Rural Development Master Plan, which is well captured in the guber hopeful’s ARISE Agenda. Sampson believes Umo Eno, who has a track record of great entrepreneural excellence, will bring his midas touch bear in the rural development of the state.

Eno’s Arise Agenda has strong focal point on grassroots development, taking into cognizance that, a greater part of the state is still rural based. In same vein, over time, grassroots development has always featured prominently in Barr. Sampson’s governance matrix. As Chairman of Council in Mkpat Enin, Dr. Ekong Sampson ensured equitable spread of key interventionist projects including health centers, mini bridge, school blocks, potable water, in most rural parts of the Local Government. He lived in Mkpat Enin throughout his two tenures as Chairman.

Also, as Honourable Commissioner for Rural Development in the State, Dr. Sampson formulated the Akwa Ibom Rural Development Master Plan, which has remained an important document till date. The Document, among other things captured sectors such as rural security, spread of amenities, human capital development, rural economy and many others.

Addressing supporters in Mkpat Enin recently ahead of Saturday’s Polls, the Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin stated that Pastor Umo Eno will build on Gov. Udom Emmanuel’s strides in rural development. Dr. Sampson noted that as next Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno will sustain improvement on the quality of life among the rural population by increasing access to basic services including portable services, electricity, good roads, education, healthcare etc.

He said, Umo Eno’s administration will strengthen rural development planning by adoption of measures that promote better and more equitable integration of the rural sectors with the rest of the state. Sampson, a former two term State Lawmaker, reechoed his stance that Pastor Umo Eno will give Akwa Ibom State, strong economy and security.

The former Environment and Petroleum Resources Commissioner expressed appreciation to his supporters for always standing by him and reassured that Mkpat Enin will vote massively for Pastor Umo Eno and House of Assembly candidate, Hon. Uwem Imo-ita. Hon. Imo-ita served as Councillor under Dr Ekong Sampson, when the Senator-elect was Chairman of Council, Mkpat Enin in the 2000s.

Barr. Sampson reiterated that beyond Pastor Umo Eno being a worthy in-law in Mkpat Enin, he possessed great qualities and content to be Governor of Akwa Ibom State, urging continuos support in Saturday’s election.

Ekong Sampson: The Legislative Powerhouse Who Was Destined To Be Senator

By Samuel Udoma

By June this year, Dr. Ekong Sampson, the Senator-Elect for Akwa Ibom South will be walking into the hallowed Red Chambers of the National Assembly as one of the legislative aristocrats of the 10th Nigerian Senate. Here is a man who is making an emotional, yet spectacular return to the Senate where he began his odyssey in the early 2000s as a Senior Legislative Aide to the inimitable Senator Udoma Udo Udoma. HE, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwwal, current Governor of Sokoto State was one of Sampson’s National Assembly colleagues back then.

Dr. Sampson, trained lawyer and journalist, enjoyed early legislative tutelage in the Senate among a sea-bed of pearls. Senators Chuba Okadigbo, Azuta Mbata, Adolphus Wabara, Ike Nwachukwu, Khairat Gwadabe, Mike Achebo and the maverick, Francis Arthur Nzeribe among other leading lights, were in the same Senate era as Dr. Sampson, albeit in the upper wrung.

It was a truly bridge building National Assembly where for instance, Northern Senators teamed up with their Southern counterparts to support the abrogation of the Onshore/Offshore Dichotomy, which principally favoured the South. Sampson’s boss, Senator Udoma was an engine room of the abrogation, while Barr. Sampson, then a relatively young lawyer, fed coal to the steam.

The abrogation of the Onshore/Offshore Dichotomy will go on to revolutionize resource control in the country, creating windfalls for oil producing regions.

Years went by, water passed under the bridge and Barr. Ekong Sampson reemerged at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as Member representing Mkpat Enin. He was elected to the House immediately after rounding up his reign as Head of Council, Mkpat Enin. He was one of the youngest Chairmen as at then.

Throughout his two tenures as Council helmsman, he lived in Mkpat Enin among his people. He built infrastructure, most notably, the Unity Hall(now named after him), and also built a strong political foundation for the local government area to blossom politically. Today, Sampson’s structures in Mkpat Enin remain extant. He was a much loved Chairman of Council.

In the State House of Assembly, Ekong Sampson rose to prominence. He was in the ‘Inner Caucus’ of the House and was nicknamed ‘The Compendium’ by his colleagues because of his mastery of parliamentary procedures, practice and knowledge of nearly every topic brought on the Floor.

It remains incontestable that a gamut of some of the Laws used in this State came from Sampson’s brains. There was hardly any bill that Sampson sponsored that wasn’t signed into law. He was so adept at lawmaking that people used to travel distance to come and witness Barr. Sampson’s earth-shaking moments in the House of Assembly. Some Assembly Correspondents believe Samson’s era in the AKHA was one of the finest since the creation of the State.

After serving out his two terms in the House, Gov. Udom Emmanuel appointment Dr. Sampson into the State EXCO as Honourable Commissioner. He will later go on to serve in a number of ministries, his last folio being the Ministry of Environment and Petroleum Resources.

As such, when Barr. Sampson grabbed the Senate ticket for Akwa Ibom South at the Primaries in SPU, Onna in May, 2022, there were no questions as to his experience, capacity and competency for the Senate Senate job. Sampson’s eventual emphatic win in the February 25, 2023 elections was only but expected.

Dr. Ekong Sampson is taking the Nigerian Senate a rich legislative and executive resumé, which will make him favorite for any Committee in the House. He is a first timer Senator but with the depth of a veteran. Sampson also goes to the Chamber as a true patriot and pan-Nigerian – dispositions that are critical to one’s impact in the House. Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin has great understanding of Nigeria and the workings. A constant conveyor belt of ideas, Dr. Sampson will offer the Senate great perspectives on how to make Nigeria a better place. He is a Senator to watch.

SAMPSON IDIONG COMMISSIONS TWO WATER PROJECTS IN ORUK ANAM

Ikot Ntuen Ibesit in Ward 6 and Ikot Akpan Otuk in Ward 9, Oruk Anam LGA which had suffered the hardship of getting potable water for decades, could not hide their joy yesterday, as Elders, women and youths trooped out to witness the commissioning of borehole donated by Prince Sampson Idiong.

Recall that Idiong in the last 5 years, aside from donating over 30 motorcycles to the youth, cars to Entrepreneurs, shelter for over 5 widows, grants to business men and scholarships to students, has also donated over 8 water projects to several communities in the area.

Commissioning the projects, Idiong, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for Oruk Anam State Constituency said that the borehole was part of his commitments to provide potable water for his constituents while promising more projects when elected a state legislator.

Speaking in Ward 6, he said the decision to site the water project in the Nigeria Institute for Oil Palm Research, NIFOR, was to ensure constant supply of water for the palm trees seedlings as well as serve members of the host community.

He decried the dilapidated state of NIFOR which according to him, had provided several employment opportunities in the past and vowed to partner with the returning house of representatives member, Hon. Unyime Idem and other relevant agencies to ensure the institution is completely resuscitated.

In ward 9, the house of assembly hopeful said he was shocked by the pictures he saw on social media that in this century, Ikot Akpan Oruk existed without a source of drinking water, hence the decision to site the project in the community. Calling the people to vote the PDP on March 11th election, Idiong promised more dividends of democracy when elected.

In their respective goodwill messages, beneficiaries of the rare gesture in the two communities were full of praises to the former Governor’s Aide while promising to canvas votes towards ensuring that his house of assembly ambition comes to fruition. The people also vowed to vote Pastor Umo Eno as the next Governor of Akwa Ibom state.

Victory for Akwa Ibom South: An Appreciation

I do not know how well to thank the Almighty God and the people of Akwa Ibom South for this emphatic vote of confidence. I thank God and my great people – Oro, Ibibio, Ekid, Obolo – for joining hands firmly to send me to the Nigerian Senate.
I appreciate the weight of your high hopes to get the job in the National Assembly done for our Senatorial District fabulously endowed even with our rich diversity.

I thank our dear Governor, HE Udom Emmanuel for his sense of sacrifice, steadfastness and patriotism in terms of the Senate politics in Akwa Ibom South. I thank our great party, the People’s Democratic Party, my former boss in the Senate, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, my Campaign Organization ably led by my Director-General, Sir Michael Essang (KSJ), friends and various support groups for keeping faith with this mission of consolidation and rebirth.

I thank my wife, Matina who, symbolically, bought the Senate form for me – a fitting tribute to women’s latitude in the governance matrix – and the larger Idemimo family for standing by me, as always, throughout the Senate campaigns.

My victory is victory for Akwa Ibom South. I congratulate my opponents in the race, confident that, in a broad measure, we are all winners, united in an odyssey to tell the fuller story of the Akwa Ibom South potential.
In the same vein, I urge support for Pastor Umo Eno and other PDP candidates in the March 11, 2023 elections. The PDP has shown that it has capacity to reposition Nigeria. Indeed, policy must drive politics and strengthen our institutions.

May God continue to bless Akwa Ibom South, Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.

REP UNYIME IDEM INSPECTS CONSTRUCTION OF IKOT UKPONGEREN BRIDGE AND 1KM ROAD WITH DUAL DRAINAGE

The Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Rep Unyime Idem has inspected the ongoing construction of Ikot Ukpongeren bridge, 1km Road with dual drainage in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The bridge which links the affected communities with other Local Government Areas in the state was destroyed over 40 years ago during the Nigerian civil war.

The bridge and road, when completed, will enhance the economy of the area through the movement of goods and services within and out of the community, and will connect the people of Oruk Anam Local Government Area and their Mkpat Enin Local Government Area neighbours who, for decades, had difficulties accessing each other after the collapse of the bridge.

The lawmaker, who is the sponsor of the project, appreciated the community for their cooperation with the contractors and promised them more developmental projects when reelected.

He commended the contractors for the speed and standard of work done so far while also reminding them of the April 2023 delivery time frame.

EKET SENATORIAL DISTRICT VOTES EKONG SAMPSON

“If I, as the Number One citizen of the State said no to the Senate seat because it was not the turn of Onna, then who can say otherwise?

As Council Chairman of Mkpat Enin, he did very well and we gave him a name there – Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin. Over there at the House of Assembly, can you do anything without mentioning Ekong Sampson? That was why we called him The Compendium. We are blessed to have Ekong Sampson as our Senatorial candidate at this time”. -Rt Hon.(Princess) Felicia Bassey
Deputy Speaker, Akwa Ibom House of Assembly. ”There is no need to pretend. You are our candidate. I have known you for a long time and I know you are the one person that can speak for Eket Senatorial District and represent the collective interest of our people. God has chosen you for us and He will protect you and make this race a successful one”
    • HRM Udo Joe Ntukobom,
Paramount Ruler of Ikot Abasi LGA.

”Oro stands solidly behind zoning of the senate seat in Eket Senatorial District and this is beyond party lines. The 2023 senate seat goes to Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency and Mkpat Enin in particular and Oro nation fully backs that. Anybody that is coming out to contest the senate seat in Eket Senatorial District against our age-long rotational arrangement upheld in the region will lose heavily and even lose his deposit.
‘We are very lucky in Eket Senatorial District to have the best candidate for the 2023 senate seat. Ekong Sampson is simply the best for the senate job. When Ekong Sampson was in the State House of Assembly, he did very well.

”In Ekong Sampson, we have a candidate that possesses the requisite experience for the senate job. Ekong represented his people very well in the State House of Assembly. • HRM Ovong Effiong Matthew Unanaowo,
Ahta of Oro and Paramount Ruler of Urue Offong/Uruko “When I was Chapter Chairman of PDP in Mkpat Enin. Rt Hon. (Barr.) Ekong Sampson, who was then in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly initiated the idea for the construction of the PDP secretariat in Mkpat Enin. We asked him for rent for the party office, but he insisted that we must own our PDP Secretariat.
He gave us money with which we bought the land for the PDP Secretariat. He also gave us funds to kick start the project. Today, Mkpat Enin is one of the few Local Government Areas in Nigeria that owns a full PDP Secretariat. We are grateful to Barr. Ekong Sampson for this and his many other interventions for the PDP in Mkpat Enin.
Barr. Ekong Sampson has bought vehicles, motorcycles and even land for PDP officials in Mkpat Enin. You can see his projects everywhere in Mkpat Enin. We love him for his empowerment programmes, his simplicity and accessibility.

Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin as we call him has provided jobs for many people. One good thing about him is that he does not discriminate where you come from. He lives for everybody. He is a man of great ideas. Ekong Sampson is an asset to the PDP. He has helped party members a lot”.

Stand firm, fear not because you are already there. Go and become Senator. I give you my blessing as the father of Okobo Local Government Area”.

  • HRM Ovong Ita Edet Okokon,
    Paramount of Okobo.

“The fact that Ekong Sampson had served as Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources gives him the mileage in understanding the dynamics of environment and oil politics. These are critical issues that affect Eket Senatorial District.
Ekong Sampson is a household name in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area where he grew up. Indeed, we in Ikot Abasi see him as one of our own. He relates very well with the youths and with everybody.

Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin, Ekong Sampson has experience, capacity and character for the Senate job. Zoning also favours him from Mkpat Enin. Remember that in Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, we have a balanced and an unshakable zoning and power sharing arrangement in which the State Assembly seat moves from Ikot Abasi to Eastern Obolo; House of Reps moves from Eastern Obolo to Ikot Abasi and the Senate seat rotates from Ikot Abasi which had occupied the position for eight years earlier, and moves to Mkpat Enin.
Ikot Abasi will vote overwhelmingly for Ekong Sampson. He is our man”.

  • Comrade Etop Enang,
Former Akwa Ibom State Youth Council Chairman/Vice Chairman of Ikot Abasi LGA. “Dr. Ekong Sampson is a promoter of Education. He established one of the best community secondary schools in the state and made it tuition free, as a mark of his philanthropy and love for education. He is accessible and loves Oro. Oro youths and students will vote for Ekong Sampson massively.
  • Comrade Etim Etim,
President General, Oro Union, Students Wing. ”The women of Eket Senatorial District have declared their commitment to associate with the political aspiration of Dr. Ekong Sampson. Barr. Sampson is a worthy son of Eket Senatorial District who is favoured by zoning, competence and character for the Eket Senate job.
Ekong Sampson is a bridge builder. He does not discriminate. He flows well with everybody. He is simple, accessible and a champion of women empowerment. We will mobilize the women to queue behind Barr. Ekong Sampson and all other PDP candidates”.
  • Obonganwan Mary Umanaette,
President, Esop Mbong Iban Eket Senatorial District.

Now, see who is the “leading candidate”, and why!
