How Onofiok Luke will Build Akwa Ibom People – Part 2 (Health)

“We have built infrastructure, we have built industries, it is time to build the people”.

In this continuation of the series on ‘how onofiok Luke will build akwa ibom people’, we take a look at the beautiful blueprints that this ‘peoples’ aspirant has for the health sector in Akwa Ibom State.

The truth remains that it takes a man that has personally visited, and had relationship with communities, and people across Akwa Ibom State even to the deepest rural areas, before someone can come up with the level of deep insights that is represented in the blueprint of Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke.

For example, one could wonder how Onofiok Luke could quickly reminisce the plight and challenges that health workers in the riverine Eastern Obolo Local Government are facing, for him to effortlessly mention it during his consultation visit to the Peoples Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom state. He said “I do not believe that health workers serving in riverine Eastern Obolo Local Government Area should earn the same hazard allowance as those working in the urban areas”.

Such is a deep statement of fact, was indicative of his knowledge of major challenges to health care service delivery in Akwa Ibom State. It was a statement that gives so much hope to the health workers who have been praying for a better working environment.

Away from that, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke believes that building the health capacity of the people is critical to any society as a healthy population will engender a productive economy. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) corroborates this assertion. In fact one of the key objectives of the WHO is “the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health”.

Of course the various administrations that had piloted the affairs of this state since the fourth republic began in 1999 have been contributing their quota maximally to the development of a workable healthcare system in Akwa Ibom State. The administration of Onofiok Luke intends to leverage on those achievements by connecting the dots and fixing the missing links.

For example, he has already identified challenges that are currently bedeviling the sector to include; unavailability of health insurance, poor distribution of health workers, high maternal/child mortality rate especially in rural communities, inadequate funding of the health sector, and lack of incentives for health or medical personnel.

A deep look into the underlisted challenges in the health sector in Akwa Ibom state are clear pointers to the fact that Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke does understand the challenges of the health sector in the State.

As a man of elegant insight into the health needs and priorities of his people; one with astute exposure to universally adopted citizen-oriented health policies and programmes, Hon. Luke has proposed a strategic blueprint which, when implemented, would enormously provide succour to the unexciting status of the health care system in the state.

Central in this remedial and revitalisation plan are four fundamental areas; heath financing, health communication, infrastructural upgrade and health personnel motivation/reinforcement. In providing a robust financing to the health care system of the state, Onofiok Luke expresses an unbridled desire to increase the budgetary allocation for improvement of the quality of healthcare delivery; provide workable health insurance schemes; and directly fund the supply of essential healthcare materials to health facilities across the state.

Whether critical or cursory, an evaluation of the health system has indicated an apparent dearth and malfunctioning of existing health facilities in the state for decades. Informed by this and the readiness to restore good health to Akwa Ibom People, Hon. Luke is genuinely resolute to equipping and upgrading School of Health Technologies/Midwifery; establishing, revamping and appropriately equipping cottage hospitals/government owned laboratories/medical diagnostic centres; establishing new and reviving defunct General Hospitals in Akwa Ibom communities. For those with minimal performance, delivery of up-to-date equipment is the plan of Hon. Onofiok Luke.

Meanwhile, it would be a waste of time to plan all these without assessment and understanding of the salient roles of health personnel in actualizing this cause, and Hon. Luke proposes recruitment of additional health workers into the system, training and retraining of existing workers in different areas of specialties, in partnership with foreign medical professionals and organisations and he has a heart to renumerate them appropriately.

All these plans are realisable only when given the right platform.

Akwa Ibom people deserve a healthy life to thrive and drive a healthy economy, and only someone with a refined sense of commitment to this arduous task, can assure this significant necessity. The options are many for only one right choice. That ONE choice is a man that knows us and we know him, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke.

He expressed profound gratitude to the institution for finding him worthy for the award and promised to do more to move the human race forward.

“Let me thank Maurid Polytechnic for finding me fit for this honour. The award came at no cost of mine but was based on the little I have done for humanity. But I sincerely appreciate this one as truly deserving.”
Idem announced that during his next phase of projects, Maurid will be considered for a lecture hall as his contribution to the development of the school. He said this is to ensure that the growing student population does not lack conducive learning environment.

“You have been watching me empower others, donate classroom blocks to schools. Today is your own turn to be supported. I want to announce that the next round of construction will commence in your school. I therefore announce the donation of a classroom block to your school. This is to show appreciation of your award on me without asking for money but was based purely on merit and service to humanity. You did not sell the award but you are trying to motivate and encourage them to do what is right”.

BUILDING THE PEOPLE— INVESTING FOR THE FUTURE

By Usen Polycarp

Just as the popular response to the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) slogan “Power to the people” affirms a strong stance that the power of democracy resides with the people, it is convincing they are a determining factor that defines our democratic principles. Why then should the people not be given a rightful place in the scheme of things as far as development and good governance is concerned? It is unarguably factual that there is a greater need to strategically position the people, especially in Akwa Ibom State for a better and prosperous future, where they are made self-reliant in all spheres of life.

As we prepare for the party’s primaries in May 2022 and the 2023 gubernatorial election in the state, there has been serious debate in some quarters based on who becomes the next governor of Akwa Ibom State when the Udom led administration expires in June 2023. Regarding the foregoing, political gladiators have presented themselves for the top job and ever since the GOAL campaign blueprint for the State was unveiled by the most preferred and frontline actor in this race, Barr Onofiok Akpan Luke, it became pronounced that he was ready and prepared to deliver dividends of democracy to the people, when he came up with the mantra of “Building and Growing together” with the people.

Indubitably, Hon. Luke has contributed positively over the years in public service as a competent and sound legislator whose antecedents hold a prominent place in the notepad of history. And in his desire to advance this superlative delivery in public service, he has made his GOAL campaign blueprint very clear, people-oriented, and in trust to building them for what lies ahead. In times like the present, the blueprint of our Governor hopeful, Hon. Luke, impresses nothing but the willingness to be responsible and accountable to the people.

It could be recalled that barely two weeks ago, Luke, who is seen by so many Akwa Ibomites as the most prepared aspirant for the race, the bridge between the past, the present and the future, had during his formal declaration, pointed out his intention to prioritise investing in human capital development, to improve skills and empower Akwa Ibom people to grow, while also working on the other hand, to improve on infrastructural development, as well as attracting foreign direct investments to the state. This clearly affirmed the words of Bill Gates that “In the long run, a nation’s human capital is the main base of competition— a leading indicator of where iitis going to be 20 years from the present”

Against this background, it is important to draw our attention to some basic points why GOAL’s campaign is anchored on building the people and growing with them.

First, the GOAL project and its campaign understands that in building the people, a solid foundation is laid for growth and sustainability. It is imperative to note that the people comes before any other thing and issues affecting their growth and development should not be trivialised or politicised. By virtue of what is contained in the GOAL blueprint, developing a robust framework to invest in human capital development and in other critical areas of importance is a course without guile, and with pure purpose. The Goal project came at the right time to afford all, an unfettered start, and a fair chance, in the race of life. Though the present situation maybe stormy, we must rise – with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew.

Secondly, positioning the people advantageously in key sectors to access better opportunities. In the words of Abraham Lincoln to the US Congress on July 4, 1861, “The people will save their government, if the government itself will do its part only indifferently well”. In line with the foregoing, the GOAL project knows the value and importance of the people and why building them remains top of the list. It is factual that when the people are taught how to fish, it is far better than giving them fish, and with the knowledge of how to fish comes and the principles of multiple catch that could in turn, have a multiplying effect on the economy of Akwa Ibom when our common GOALs are actualised. When the people are empowered, they are at advantageous positions to contribute positively to government programmes, policies and projects in key sectors.

Thirdly, building and growing with the people means promoting brilliant ideas for collective benefits. The GOAL project is people-oriented desires to place premium on promoting, projecting brilliant ideas that could better be harnessed for effective management of our resources in the long run. As a people full of potentials and ingenuity, we must stand our ground to support this noble course to the end and for that Akwa Ibom of our dreams.

Summarily, the above points are just few and a tip on the ice berg of what the GOAL project has in stock for Akwa Ibom people of all social classes. May God help us as electorates not to take decisions that will make this opportunity miss us. Made simply, the GOAL project stands for building the people to be self-reliant– being a major investment any government that is growth and development minded can make. Therefore, let Akwa Ibomites, as a matter of concern, rise to embrace this sign of new dawn, reject and resist any attempt to mortgage our future for a pot of porridge and suffer the consequences for another four years and beyond.

As an Akwa Ibomite, I go for the GOAL. You too can join the train to a better future, where we shall build and grow together.

GOAL4AkwaIbom.

How Onofiok Luke will Build Akwa Ibom People – Part 1

“We have built infrastructure, we have built industries, it is time to build the people”.

Many who have paid attention to speeches presented by Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke, a Frontline Governorship aspirant in Akwa Ibom State should be very conversant with the statement quoted above.

It is a statement of hope, assurance, and a guarantee that given the opportunity, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke will not be a Governor whose concentration on any sector of the economy will ever be to the detriment of the welfare of the people. It does not mean sharing government funds, but he will ensure that government programmes and projects have direct and immediate impact on the people from all spheres of life and those who live in the farthest parts of the state be it in the marshlands of Otunene and Iwofe in Eastern Obolo, Ikpanya in Ibiono Ibom or Ikot Ukpong in Obot Akara.

‘Building the people developmental philosophy’ has been a lacuna and a deep void in Akwa Ibom’s political, developmental and administrative practice since creation. And it is only a person like Onofiok Luke who has been an advocate of a people-centered government since his university days that would have the foresight to marshal out the plans he already has for Akwa Ibom people.

“Building the people agenda” like a thrilling theatrical performance is new, fresh, galvanizing and above all, completely in acknowledgement of Akwa Ibom peoples’ peculiarities and realities.
For example, the government, both at the federal and state levels, keep praising itself over her investment in agriculture. However, a greater percentage of our vast lands remain used for subsistence farming.

The Government of Onofiok Luke will amongst other actions gather farmers in all Local Government Areas, and train them on specific crops that are favoured by their soils, and then create farm settlements where hitherto subsistent farmers are given access to machines, and other farm implements that were hitertho outside their reach to enable them carry out a commercially rewarding mechanized farming for the purpose of spreading wealth and ensuring food security. This will benefit rural dwellers maximally and place value on the culture of farming that we are known for.

In the area of health, despite the fact that Onofiok Luke is not a health worker, as a former speaker of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, he expressed a very high level of knowledge towards the happenings in the health sector in Akwa ibom state when he paid a consultation visit to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP recently. Onofiok Luke said “I do not believe that a health worker serving in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area should earn the same hazard allowance with the person working in the urban areas”.
The above statement alone showed high level of readiness and political will to solve the problem of absolute neglect of the health structure in the rural areas, where health workers reject postings and rather insist on being posted to urban areas of the state.
He also has plans to pay keen attention to the neglected primary healthcare and hospitals in rural communities too. Onofiok wants a better life for all Akwa Ibom people and not just people in the urban centres.

In Education, Mr. Luke vowed to restore students’ bursary across the state as a way of subsidizing the burden of school fees. He also said that he would not pay lip service to the free education project but would match free education with the provision of basic amenities in public schools to make the public schools very attractive and qualitative enough for even the children of the rich to comfortably enroll; he pledges very regular training and retraining of school teachers in government schools.

His approach to governance seems to be very different. This is indeed the developmental philosophy that Onofiok Luke studied within and outside the country before now, for a time like this where a new developmental ideology; an ideology founded on many human experiences and realities on ground, rather than one that is ignorant of Akwa Ibom hues and cries will be needed to redefine governance.

Again, it is worrying why no Government since 1999 had considered replicating Ariaria market in Aba in Akwa Ibom State. These are projects that impact directly on the economic well being of Akwa Ibom people.
In the first two years in office, Onofiok Luke will duplicate Ariaria market in Akwa Ibom State and also relocate the mechanic village to a larger space, putting in place a training facility for our people to professionalize their crafts. Our mechanic village will attract people from neighbouring states who wish to fix their cars in a reliable and professional set up to drive down to Akwa Ibom State and spend money in our economy. These are projects that impact directly on the people.

Onofiok Luke in the tourism sector will make Ibeno, Eastern Obolo and Mbo Local Government residents become rich people by developing their beaches to attract tourists. Tourists will visit these places and spend money and make the business people in these places rich.

A general culture of using Government money to serve the people by happily paying entitlements of civil servants, contractors and political office holders, are capable of spreading wealth to the deepest fabric of the society and this shall be the modus operandi of Onofiok Luke’s administration.

In the coming series, we shall take a deeper and more detailed look at the various sectors of the economy as a way of laying bare the blueprint and manifesto of “Building Together, Grrowing Together” of Rt. Hon. Barr. Onofiok Luke.

Luke charges women to strengthen advocacies before legislation

The Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Judiciary, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Onofiok Luke has admonished women to intensify advocacies around gender equity and more women participation in politics before decisions or legislations are made.

BREKETE FAMILY MEDIA GROUP PICKS PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION FORM FOR GOVERNOR EMMANUEL

Brekete Family, a human rights and good governance advocacy media group in Abuja, has purchased the 2023 Presidential election nomination form for Governor Udom Emmanuel with a call on the Akwa Ibom State Chief Executive to accept their appeal and step forward for the contest.

The form was purchased, Wednesday at the PDP National headquarters, Wadata Plaza in Abuja.

Addressing the press, leader of the delegation, Mr Innocent Orji, popularly known as Daddy Scaffold, said their decision to buy the Presidential nomination form for Governor Emmanuel was informed by the need to ensure credible leadership for Nigeria in 2023.

He explained that they found Governor Emmanuel most suitably qualified to govern the country at a time like this.

“We are mandating him to contest. This is the only way we can make this country better.

“Our reason behind this is that since we got independence as a country, we’ve not really fared any better.

“There is nothing to write home about. We travelled to Akwa Ibom and saw everything, and we even discovered there are many things he has done that he didn’t mention during the interview we had with him here in Abuja.

“As a result of that we are of the opinion that if he can do that in his own state, he will do that in Nigeria. This is the only way we can move this nation forward”.

The Brekete family show airs on radio and cable television, and streams online through social media platforms and Human Rights Radio 101.1 FM in Abuja, Nigeria.

Reacting, a cross section of Nigerians who watched the live streaming of the purchase of nomination form on the Brekete family platform, commended the group for the move, and urged the Governor to accept the clarion call by Nigerians, urging him to rescue the country from bad leadership.

A Northerner, Musa Muhammed prayed God to bless members of the Brekete family for the gesture “God bless all the Brekete Family and bless Nigeria”.

Promise Asbiggyange was hopeful that Governor Emmanuel’s Presidency would herald “positive result” in the country.

“Positive result is going to be necessary”

In his reaction, Echie Sylvester from the East noted “very good. I hail ordinary President and the entire Brekete Family Worldwide”.
